I was pinging 200-300 on BW CS servers last night. So I just went and played with ma DC instead.

OK today though. Back to 30-50.

So, no...U R not alone....ADSL was spannered last night (running at approx half speed).

when I phoned it last night (and just there now) I got the same old shit of "No reported Network faults" ... and yet I still have the problem ...

What home gateway (hg number) are you using Ono ??? And are you gettig any PL with the normal pings ???

i dunno what time you phoned dood...but between 8:00 and 12:00 last night the message said that openworld customers would experience slow throughput on all platforms....

Saying that ADSL usually rocks with quake ... expect pings of anywhere between 30-90 depending on the server (but with zero loss, flatline netgraph)

Be aware that BT are currently attempting to cap the ports used by file sharing clients (Gnutella etc) to stop bandwidth hogs and this may be partly why the service is porr at the moment.

I dunno if its working again today...I will wait till i get home and try it.....

Yes I know that my HG number is in my connection username.....but I am not in front of my home PC and I cant remember what it is.....4 I think .....

I did have throughput problems (still having them as of last night) but the BTopenworld server status helpline is still reporting problems (still) - but I am chilling and hoping they will get their shit together and give me back full speed.

I ran serveral bandwidth test last night, and although the downstream from the BT FTP site is running at full speed (U would kinda expect that being a hop inside the BTopenworld backbone) as soon as you try and get outside the troughput is up and down more than my birds knickers :) sometimes its going at 500+Kb/s and then it will suddenly drop to less than 100 :(
It is also dropping quiet a few packets on route.

There could be hundreds of reasons for this, but DSL is succepotable to all sorts of noise, seeing as the carrier for the data is ultrahigh frequency, and stupid things like transistor radios, mains cables and cellphones can slow it down and make it drop packets.

Strange thing is, i dont think its just ADSL. My mate, who has HH reckons its very gay at the moment, and quake servers, especially 1.30 DM have been abnormally quiet recently.

I have only had ADSL for a week, but it was pulling pings of 30-45 the first couple of days, and I know for a fact that the contention on my DSL card in the exchange is nowhere near the limit, but yet my pings are now up in the high 90's

Like I said, BT are in the middle of throttling back the ports used for point to point file sharing, so they can stop the bandwidth hogging - and this may be having an adverse effect on the throughput of normal net traffic.

Anyways, dunno about U's lot, but my connection is still poor, and I am gonna call em today and find out the full SP.

-Update-

I just got the phone with openworld, after telling them about the packet loss and rubbish throughput.

They say "They are still investigating countrywide reports of loss and a reduction in speed"

I pointed out that a hell of a lot of ADSL users have the connection primarily for gaming and that unlike web browsing, bad packet loss affects the quality of the game.

They reckon they have had loads of reports of problems with quake and other multiplayer internet games, and request that the following information is sent....

The type of ADSL service you have
The IP of the quake servers that you have problems with
The number of Traceroute hops to the server
The times that the connection is bad

Send this to support@btopenworld.com

Hopefully they will eventually realise that quake and online gamers need a decent connection.

In the meantime, you can test your through put at

http://www.dslreports.com/

Your looking to get between 400-500Kb/sec on a home 500 connection with as little loss as possible :)

its not happing at the moment, but be cool, I am sure it will get sorted eventually (by the release of Quake 4 possibly)

At least you can still browse for porn
