Boxed AMD processors

Well I ordered an athlon XP2500+ yesterday. Went for the boxed version to save the trouble of picking up a seperate heatsink and fan, but turns out that they're out of stock and I'll be waiting a few days for a boxed retail version.

Is it worth the wait? I couldn't really find any information on what heatsink and fan is supplied with the boxed version so I have no basis for comparison. But I would have thought that AMD would be supplying equipment that is more than adequate for the task.

I could cancel the order and get an OEM processor instead along with a seperate fan and heatsink. A friend suggested getting a thermaltake volcano for budget cooling (I'm poor.) But really need more advice before doing something rash like that :)

Cheers.

The heatsinks you normally get with the Retail versions are average and it would most probably be better to get the OEM version and then a HSF.

Thanks Emb.

Any recommendations? I want something cheap and noisy :)

At under £20 the Volcano 9 is one of the better HSF.

Yeah also the generic AMD HSF's make one hell of a racket... I'd say go with a Zalman (teh win) but they're about £35 although noiseless :p

High end AMD stuff is insanely expensive, I think I was shown 9 quid dearer (!) for a Barton XP 3gig compared to a true 3 gig P4 with hyper threading.
