.............. and I'm not going to bother opening it and setting it up until:

a. I get the funds to get it chipped for MAME, or

b. a decent game comes out on it.

I kid you not. There is fuck all out for it this year.

nah, they aint really the same, debugs have 128megs (retail have 64) - the dev kits have a second IDE connect on board, and a serial port for direct kernel debugin

Whatever.

It looks far nicer than the black brick and the pack came with the extra green controller S for £20 more than the standard pack.

Managed to get rid of my old spare PAL Cube in exchange which was nice.

In line with my promise to never buy another PAL-only console I'm gonna have the Executor 2 chip put in it along with the HDD upgrade to 40Gigs or more. This will allow me to play import games, watch multiregion DVDs and play XMAME.

I completed Halo about 6 months ago (within 3 days) when I had my brother's XBox. I found it very tiresome towards the end and won't be picking up a copy now.

UC is total bollocks. Played it and I thought it sucked bigtime.

Won't be using Live. From a poll I did recently - very few people used it regularly after the inital novelty has worn off. All my online gaming is done via the PC.

Yeah it's probably not worth investing in it really, I guess this is microsoft's test run for the xbox 2 when broadband will be available in more areas.

Possibly.

I've always had the opinion that the UK is just not ready for online gaming on consoles. Give it another 3-4 years.

You still need the dongle though, don't you?

Oh, and you can play xbox online sans live. There's a gamespy arcade style utility that if you have your xbox connected to your pc, it can fake xbox link up games (i.e. direct linkup games).

It's pretty good actually, I had a quick shot of Halo on it and it was fun, but fairly laggy :|

And Ono, the xecutor 2 lite is only 30 quid inc P&P. Get it now and solder it yourself, it's dead easy.

As for "there's no good games" there are actually a few very good ones, and one or two pretty good ones.

Splinter Cell, of course, is fantastic. Timesplitters 2 (though not xbox exclusive) is gud, Burnout 2 is fab, MGS 2 substance is good. Soul Calibur 2 is very much fun, Rallisport Challenge is superb, Colin Mcrae 3 is slightly less so but still great. Oh and I've been playing 007: Nightfire loads, it's *dire* on the pc, but super fun on the xbox.

There's actually a fair few more that I really really like, but I can't remember them atm. I shall edit this post as soon as I think of them.

Edit: Project Gotham Racing!!!!

actually....

my mate just opened his green retail xbox kit and *claims* that there are 2 sets of memory banks, so maybe it does have 128 after all.
mmm, modchip and a debug bios would be nice, all but 1000 quids worth of debug kit =)

Oh and if you've got a modchip, you can use x-dvd2.0 (i think its called) to play dvds without the dongle.
Look on #xbins on efnet, or drop me a PM for the binary.

The mame with 128megs would require a lot of code change. (I'm lead to believe that it can only use 64megs for the GPU)

Edit: Project Gotham Racing!!!!

I am getting the X-Ecutor Lite and an HDD upgrade to 80 gigs mate.:p

As for the games you mention:

Splinter Cell - played it - it's shit IMHO
Burnout 2 - brilliant - have it on NTSC Cube.
Soul Calibur 2 - got it on Cube along with 2 x Hori Arcade sticks.
MGS2 - nooooooooooo! Thanks.
Rallisport/Colin McCrae - Played both. Both OK - but not brilliant.
Project Gotham - no thanks.
007 Nightfire - Nath - your creditbility has just evaporated!;)

I bought the XBox because circumstances dictated that I could. ie.

1. I had a spare PAL Cube to exchange which was not used since I got my Jap/USA modded Cube. I also have no more PAL games.

2. the Green XBox took my eye.

3. I know a friend of a friend who can get it chipped for me.

There is another similar discussion going on at TheDVDforums and I will reiterate what I said there:

I bought my Cube because it has the *best* games.

I bought my XBox for emulation, DiVX, etc. I will not be buying many games on it purely because the stuff out on it is so mundane or not exclusive (in which case I buy the Cube version).

Had my Xbox since August 02 bought Xbox, 2 controllers Halo, DOA3, Spiderman, Obi-wan, DVD Kit all for £280 from GAME in Bristol. Guy did me a deal it was sweat. Got it home, and invited loads of my mates around for beer and games, but we just ended up playing Halo, played the co-op as well as DM. I have around 30 games now, Regret buying some of them though but generally the Xbox is a good Games platform, haven't set-up Xbox Live yet my parents won't let me put a ethernet cable up to my room, so i'll have to wait, till I move out. recently got Ghost Recon for Xbox a must buy, it really kicks ass. espically if u have a 24" Widescreen and a 5.1 Dolby Digital Surround system.
