Boot up problem

Hmm any ideas on a weird boot up problem.

Some time computer boots up fine...

Other times it gets to the detecting IDE devices and I get a noise like its trying to access my HD repeatedly and then one of the following happens:

It says its seen my first HD and not the second but I get the msg Primary Hard Disk Fail --- note if I go into BIOS and try auto-detect it then wont see either

It sees neither Hard disk and doesnt boot

It sees the first HD and boots up with that but not showing the other one (in boot up or in windows)

I've tried reseating cables, getting new IDE cables, running HD's on the secondary channel (same thing) and even tried the primary HD in another machine (seemed to work OK but that could have been lucky boots I guess)

Ok, if your hard drives were screwed, chances are they'd not work in the other machine either. It's not your IDE cables. So there's every chance your motherboard's f00ked.

Tried swapping them? E.g. swapping over which is master and which is slave?

To test the mobo see if you can borrow a n IDE PCI card from someone and test that?
