being offline over the summer, i read a few of these things to pass the time... which was nice. anyway, just finished reading "the sacred art of stealing " by christopher brookmyre (a scottish bloke). tis a very good read... could wheel out all the cliches etc, if you like this sort of thing, you'll love it.. etc. etc.

anyway, here a short story to give you a taste of his writing...

so with xmas on the cards, anyone got any recommendations for reading matter... anything a bit different/humour/biography?

Just finished reading The Clan of the Cave Bear by Jane M. Auel.

I'd definately recommend having a look at that if you haven't read it already. Found it quite thought provoking as it's set in the time when neanderthal man and modern humans shared the eath, and is a good story to boot.

My mum tells me the sequels aren't as good but might pick them up anyway sometime.

The Adversary Cycle by F. Paul Wilson are probably the best 6 books I have read.

His followup Repairman Jack novels were also good.

Sister Night is probably his best novel unrelated to the Adversary.

cask: they aren't. but do have more se><or!

I just finished
Assasin´s Apprentice, Royal Assasin and Assasin´s Quest by Robin Hobb. Imo the first and last are pretty cool. RA was a more touchy-feely thing, not quite my stylee [I got bored half way through and read Shogun [James Clavell] and Ender's Game [Orson Scott Card] to sooth my ravaged mind\

Your mum is right. Avoid them, Valley of the Horses is terrible.

Unless you are 15, in which case...it has more sex in it.

Oh, books, sorry, got sidetracked.

Anything by Peter Carey. Amazing writer. Can't single any out because they're all fantastic, painful, emotional, lovely, epic, soaring, poetic books.

Finished reading Moby Dick a few months ago, that was good - took some work though, worth it in the end.

Reading Rage by Salman Rushdie at the moment and loving it, never read anything of his before and it's superb, great wordsmith.

Out of all the SF & fantasy stuff the only things I rate are Iain M Banks and a few classics like "Stranger in a strange land" by Heinlein and some Doris Lessing maybe, the rest is pretty much mindless pap - oh and some Philip K Dick is OK.

Patrick Suskind's a good writer - but there's not a lot to read.. in fact just "Perfume" and a book of short stories, Perfume's superb though.

Plenty more but that's a start :)

Dubliners - James Joyce

A book written before he started to write books that were a pain in the arse to read.

I've gotten through 3/4 of portait of an artist as a young man and albiet amazingly well written it was a bastard to read and as such I gave up reading it and started on harry potter! :/

How to lose friends and alienate people by toby young is kinda fun, in a complety shallow way! :p

Er, yeah... I don't read much, too lazy. I only read books that I've been referred to via songs/friends :)
