BluRay via PC

I`m thinking about buying a BluRay drive for my PC. Is it actually possible to watch BluRays over the computer? I know it´s possible but what about the performance? Whenever I try to play a DVD via computer, it always requires a lot of pre-caching, otherwise the movie is stuttering like hell.
Any experiences with BluRays?

Dosen't that just mean your drive speed is pants?

Yeah, i think there's just a problem with your drive.

I run DVDs and only stutter comes from your basic "windows stutters", when the computer halts and goes "Umm...oh yeah!" and if i pause the DVD for a longer period. The only stutter then is the dvd starting it's spincycle again.

Otherwise on your question; i guess blurays are like dvd drives. Works or not :D

[insert the usual "my drive is just fine i never had any problems with other games i even installed unreal tournament and starcraft and kokotony wilf in the land of the green mermaids and it worked so fo" monologue here] ;)

hm....
Never thought about my drive tbh, but I´ll give it a try. Maybe it´s a software issue. o_O

all drives have a 'speed' like, 8x 16x etc.
Nothing to do with software, its a hardware issue. Get an up to date drive, not just any old £5 crap from pcworld :D

Yeah your drive is off if its doing that, nothing to do with software, unless your running off 256 ram and a P1 and have Itunes open at the same time

Which Software are you using? I've always had problems with Power DVD when it comes to performance. Strangely even the Windows Media Player worked better than that, but I guess VLC should do the trick, aye?

Generally BlueRay should work fine, but ofc you want a full-HD screen to support the resolution of 1920*1080 ;)

Just out of interest, are you using an IDE or SATA drive?

SATA drives are very cheap these days so if it's the former, it might be worth while investing in one... although really for most CD's, a normal IDE should be fine. Then again, if you're thinking about Blu-Ray, I have no experience of PC ones tbh so ignore this :D

For DVDs, the one that came with NERO.

I`m using a SATA drive as my main hdd, but have an IDE hdd as well for backup purposes.

BR Drive (S-ATA)
HDCP/HDMI/DVI Graphics Card
"" "" "" Monitor
HDMI/DVI cable.

Tadaa

THOUGH there is a quality increase if you just use a HD screen (over VGA) as I've tested. Played non-HD videos and HD videos on my screen upstairs oer VGA and the HD ones ARE clearer :) So.. It's fine. (It's the drive!)

thorwyn, if you do not have a HDCP compliant graphics card, or your PC is very loud, then I suggest getting a standalone BR player. Will cost you about £130.

I have a GeForce 8800 GTS, so the card is hdcp ready.
I´ll borrow an external BR player from a friend of mine and test it. :)

Thanks everybody!

You also need a HDCP compliant monitor, i.e. one made in the last year or so.
I was given to understand that there are ways around that - i.e. you can play BluRays without HDCP monitors/graphics cards.

Well you can rip the disk I guess, but it's quite alot of hassle, or you can get a special cable that rips the video... can't remember what it's called though, but it's expensive.
