ya the scanner is built into the client so it runs every time you start wow :) it only checks thier files and your memory to see whats running if it detects anything it does its thing, all good mmorpgs use this sort of thing and i am sure like Mythic(dark age of camelot) they signed up to the 2 famous hack programs and browse thier forums to see what hacks exploits they use.

and yes you agreed after you clicked accept after the last patch we had :)

any little thing that gets the cheats and exploiters caught has my vote and too be honest blizz aint going to give a xxxx about anyones mp3/movie or huge porn collection also with the amount of subscribers they have that is a shit load of illegal/or porn material :) would need a large bank of servers just for the list , want pure privacy get a cd burner and back ur shit up ( not aimed at OP)

Except that's already been shown not to be totally the case on page 6 of the thread that was linked: http://pix.nofrag.com/11/45/5e83b6cd31f547ea961b2df422ad.html

Also it should be noted that whatever they put in their EULA doesn't have the right to override higher-up laws regarding data privacy and such, so whatever they're doing accessing IE history/cookie files could quite possibly be illegal.

If you check what it actually does with filemon (from sysinternals) you can see that it never actually reads any data from index.dat. It looks like one of the internet DLLs linked from wow opens that file as a matter of course, but it never reads or modifies it.

Having looked through the log filemon spits out I couldn't see any evidence of blizzard scanning your internet cache or any of the other crazy things people have posted about happening.

You can take the tin foil hats off now.

I dont mind them scanning my computer to be honest, they are a well known established company who will only scan for hacks/cheat as they say. This kind of activity has to comply with several laws and will be monitored by external sources. If they were ever found to scan and open files which have nothing to do with them, they would face a massive amounts of legal action.

They are just trying to stop people from cheating which is a good thing for all us fair players. If anyone thinks they may be scanning your personal files or you just want to see what they are scanning, then you can use filemon to see whats happening on your computer. If you use the tool, and think you see something strange being opened/scanned, I would suggest you get a second opinion from someone before making a complaint to Blizzard or anyone. Do remember that if you are running a Virusscanner it may be opening files too which will also be included in the filemon log.

Filemon can be downloaded from: http://www.sysinternals.com/Utilities/Filemon.html
