^0 or ^8 will work as black. id only use the lower 3 bits of the character's byte for the colour (0 - 7) e.g. you can use ^A as the equivalent of ^1 ....yadda yadda...
in a name (where I would have thought that most people want it, as black text in a message means that is had to see.....)
do
/name "^0The Stranger"
and the console recons your name is black, but when you say somthing, it will appear red (that might be because that was the colour my name was before hand), however, if you do
/name "^^0The Stranger"
you get ^The Stranger in black, but with the ^ in white (or whatever colour is set before hand)
um, hmm, last night I used /name "^1The ^0Stranger" and it worked fine, maybe id software changed it so you could use just one ^, and I just didnt notice....
Last night I was on a standard q3 server (baseq3) and after hcanging my cfg to use ^0 for black it did not work, so I conclude that OSP (and maybe other mods) ^0 or ^8 is black and ^^0 or ^^8 is black for baseq3
