Hi all,
had a search and I see Throdgrain had a thread on a similar issue and mine is the same but I ain't techie in the slightest :(

Got an MSI 6340M motherboard that has a new version of the BIOS now available on the site but I haven't got a clue where to start regarding flashing the Bios and creating a boot disk etc...

My machine is running XP Home and is a XP1700+ but I'm worried I'll screw it up by not installing the BIOS upgrade properly.

I've read the readme but am still none the wiser....

Any mighty sages out there able to help me please?

Thanks one and all in advance

Like a number of companies MSI has a easier solution for people such as yourself.

GO to this page

http://www.msi.com.tw/html/support/liveupdate/main.htm

1. A Security Warning will appear just click Yes
2. Go to bottom of page and click on InstallShield Wizard (Blue Button), this will then install Liveupdate (Downloaded via the InstallShield Wizard)
3. Run the MSI Live Update 2 program, can be found underPrograms/MSI/Live Update 2/
4. A browser window opens then click on Live BIOS on left side.

This will normally find and install the latest BIOS.

Be warned, if you use an "unofficial" ie. not supported BIOS, you may screw your BIOS chip altogether.

Thankfully, you can get replacement chips from MSI, and even have the old one reprogrammed.

So Im told. :wink2:

Lol btw, I was bloody terified. In the end Embattle's link to a program for my asus board was brilliant.
Download it, install it. It says , this is the bios you got, whcih one do you want ? This one ? Ok. Downloads it for you, installs it for you. Restart. The end :)

Buon giorno :)

Dell, love them or hate them, are also very good with their BIOS updates. Just enter the service code for your PC on their site, all updates for that system are then listed. Then simply select the most recent BIOS update, which is contained in a InstallShield .exe file. Simply execute the file, the setup wizard checks your PC's suitability and present BIOS, and if all is okay it simply asks you to reboot. And hey presto, the BIOS is updated :)

Kind Regards

Yeah, the whole flashing the BIOS thing really scares me and I just haven't got a clue about it all... trouble is, I want to bump my machine up to an xp2600 from the 1700 I'm on at the moment and the only way to do that is upgrade the BIOS (well, that or get a new motherboard - and THAT's even more terrifying ;))

I'm assuming the BIOS upgrade can only be done through DOS? At least that's what the autoupgrade thing sez anyway...

Sorry for being such a spam-brain about this, just terrified of screwing my machine up :(

Its really quite simple (although daunting) to update your bios. The simple rule is always use the flashing program for your board - just because you have an ami bios doesnt mean that amifl336.exe will work.

Always print off the page on bios flashing from your mobos website and rtfm before you attempt it. Some bios flash programs will allow you to back up the old bios. This is always reccomended. And make sure that your power supply isn't about to be turned off by your dad or whoever before you start.
