We had a little discusion this evening.

2 people bidding on a gem.
Auction closes at 20.00 hours.
I make my final bid at 19.59 and 50 secs.....which is in my opinion 10 secs before closing.

20.00 Auction closes

Someone else bid at 20.00 and 30 secs

who should get the item?
lets speak it out here so everyone knows when he shoul;d make his final bid?

......how did real thing go......seller made the offer to us to lotto fer the gem......the other one din't want to lotto and started whining...I made seller give him gem.

For items such as the gem you're talking about this type of argument is unusual...

For expensive items such as sidi items etc you can put buffers on them, you can do this with the inexpensive items too but it's not usually worth doing.

I did it earlier 30mins before bidding ended because i saw a argument was going to break out so i put a buffer on a ring in my auction and the buffer worked out well... it prevented arguments and got me a unbelievable price :).. in your case it was VERY unexpected that there would be a last minute bid for the gem so the seller acted correctly in telling you both to do /rand 100 because she couldn't decide who won.

imo, if the auction states the close bid is at 20.00 hours, then that means 20.00 and 00 seconds, so any bid after 20.00 and 00 seconds would be invalid, but then people make up their own auction rules when it suits em.

Edit: Agree with acei about the whole buffer thing.

That was a tricky situation indeed :/
never happend to me before and yes, the thought about a buffer
crossed my mind, but also felt like a silly thing to do
over such a common and usually cheap item.

Anyways, ty Sindala for beeing a good sport and
letting me off the hook easy :)

Couldn't agree more. The whole auction system varies from person to person and it can get really f**king annoying.

So since everyone agrees, closed at 20.00 means 19.59 bids are last valid bits, People can maybe use this post to overcome further discusions, in case this sort of thing happens again.

Generally its a good thing to have a 5 min time out after the last bid to make it fair for all bidders.
-- to avoid last second solo bidding
-- which will extend the actual closing time of the auction for all active items.

-- I've seen this as standard on a few auction sites.
