I think its your graphics card. I don't think its up to it tbh. I had one of those when I used to play BF1942 and it was marginal then...

Launching/Loading Issues: The most common problem with BF2 is that the game crashes to desktop or goes to a black screen when you first launch it. The reason for this is either incompatible hardware (make sure you meet all the minimum specs), or more usually the fact that you're not running at the default Windows XP refresh rate (60Hz). By default the game tries to launch at 800x600@60Hz initially, so your system must be able to run that same resolution and refresh rate, otherwise the game will abort. If you are using any refresh rate override program/method, disable it (e.g. if you're using Refresh Force, click the 'Restore Original Settings' button and apply). Alternatively, see the Advanced Tweaking section of the guide for details on how to set a different startup resolution, in case your graphics card/monitor simply cannot do 800x600@60Hz resolution. Once you've got the game running, you can then change the resolution to suit your taste in the in-game settings, and importantly you can select a higher refresh rate. Then you can reapply any refresh rate override and the game will launch without any problems. To set a non-standard resolution see the Advanced Tweaking section.

Also, make sure your drivers are up to date with your sound card. I know this sounds lame, but I was having the same problem and it turned out to simply be a driver problem :)

bf2 doesnt support your gfx card. look in your handbook to see which gfx card it supports. i think you will find it only supports 5 series cards and onwards. i had to upgrade from my geforce 4800 ti so i could play bf2 as i had the same problem.

when they say support all they mean is, they where tested on those cards, not that it dont work.

i've not got the cash to upgrade my card and all my other games work fine on it, im not gonna update my card for a game which cost me £19.99, when it will cost about £140 for semi-good card.

i'll just sell it down the 2nd hand shop.

and Chameleon i've been though all the support things, every webby i could find, spent 6 hours yesterday, and i've gave in.

Sounds like it's the graphics card then mate. Sorry we couldn't be of more help.
As said already, you could do with replacing that graphics card asap and if you've now found a popular game that it wont support, you're gonna find this problem more and more .... and probably soon. I was able to upgrade a mates pc for him not so long ago with my old graphics card when I replaced mine. Maybe you could buy/beg one off a mate or someone on here? It's worth an ask ... I bet most on here also hoard all their old pc bits and bobs ... most of it never to be used again ;)

yup - I had the 4200 when I got BF2 and it did not run.

picked up a 5950 on the cheap and BF2 ran straightaway.
