I have 2 80gb IBM desktar discs.. not sure of model, but they are working great.. been using them for 1.5 years now...

Do a backup just incase bud, you don't need the hassle of losing that much data.

IBM deskstar(slave) drive just failed on me during the early hours of Saturday morning. Think its taken out a Maxtor drive in the process(master). Dual boot system. Windows XP is trashed, Linux on slave drive is trashed, also seems to have caused problems with motherboard. System is reluctant to boot from cd drive when i try to recover.
Wih hindsight I should of twigged something was wrong during the week. Erratic behaviour reading cds. Goodbye mp3s etc

Hmm, I have an IBM Deskstar 80 GB drive (IC35L080AVVA07-0) that has been acting somewhat weird for ages (about 2 months after I got it).
For the moment, it works perfectly, except that a few times a day it chirps using some built in speaker.

SMART doesn't report anything out of the ordinary tho. Perhaps it's just a thermal recalibration being done, but still it's kind of odd..

Then again, the last 3 Maxtor disks I've had all failed within a year as well, so I'm seriously considering going for some RAID functionality in my next home PC :<

Make sure not to use RAID 0 then :p

That is the EXACT noise I got on both drives shortly before they died, IBM issued a firmware for the drives so you might want to try that but you MUST backup anything impotant bud as it sounds like your drive is on the verge of dying just like mine :(

The problem started with the IBM 75GXP models, which were released about 4-5 years ago. They're very nice drives, until they die. At first IBM would take RMA's, do a low-level format and send them back. Until the user got pissed off and bought a new hardisk. I've been using mine for about 4 years and only needed to do a low-level format twice. Now I know which areas of the disk are likely to corrupt, I have them partitioned out.

The disks aren't safe to use for vital data. I'd avoid Hitachi drives for a couple of years until you can see some feedback(although they're meant to be good drives now). There's a lot of debate over who makes the best drives, the only thing to say for sure is the Samsung 120p drives make the least noise. The WD Raptor 75GB is the fastest SATA for seek times, though for file transfers and sustained speed, the new Maxtor Diamondmax10 drives are reportedly faster, with NCQ enabled. Seagate seem to be good all round drives.

OMG, I just checked, I have a 40gig IC35L040AVER07-0 and It's been working fine since the last hmm 3 or 4 years.

Although I am planning to buy a new SATA drive soonish.

I work for IBM in the UK, I support the Armed Forces hardware though.

Once I am back in work Thursday night I will check and see what the status is, I presume you can raise an RCMS (problem ticket) for this and get it replaced...

I'll update the post with anything I can find on these components, there might be a fix in place...

Also, bear in mind I cannot actually fix this direct so please don't flame me :)
