Best/Worst cover versions?

My nomination for the best cover version I've heard would probably be Muse's version of The House Of The Rising Sun. Failing that, the Manics cover of the Theme from M*A*S*H is damn good too.

As for the worst, it would have to be Golden Lights by The Smiths. Not because it was a good song to begin with, but simply because it's also one of the worst songs ever.

Discuss!

Sisters of Mercy covered Jolene (Dolly Parton), Gimme Shelter (Rolling Stones), Emma (Hot Chocolate) and Gimme Gimme Gimme (A Man After Midnight) by Abba and managed to fucking butcher each one

Worst: anything by Robson & Jerome, I can't remember the titles because I've successfully blocked them from my mind.

Best: toughy, liked Manics MASH theme, the Fugee's Bob Marley one was ok.

All Stains - Under the Bridge. They should be shot for even trying. There are some songs which should be left well alone because to cover them would be sacrilege. Under the Bridge, With or Without You, Everybody Hurts, etc...

Can't think of a best at the moment, but I suppose FNM - Easy will do for now.

Nirvana - My Sherona was a goody, that Portishead cover by Mike Patton is genuis, and you have to give kudos for Travis doing that cover of "Hit Me Baby (One More Time) and making it sound like a perfectly credible decent song.

All Apologies by Sinead O'Connor rubbed me the wrong way.

Worst Cover...there are so many criminal cover version out there, and so little time. Will Young - Light My Fire is one I'm particularly bitter about.

Best Cover...Reel Big Fish - Take On Me never fails to make me laugh. And Travis - Baby One More Time is excellent.

Good: Muse - Can't Take my eyes off you - very funkeh

Bad: The Vines - Miss Jackson - The best part of that song was the Sorry miss jackson wooooooo. And they replaced it with stoned rock :(

Earsure covering Solsbury Hill, should hit number 10 in the charts tonight.... thats pretty good..

As of worst, the aforementioned Avril Lavigne cover of Chop Suey made me scream and leave the room till it had finished, never have i hgeard such obnoxious utter shit, I would rather have a life of listening to Will Young than to ever listen to that again.

Speaking of Britney spears, Mr. Bungle's cover of Hit me... is rather good, too. Well, sort of. The vocal drift off towards the end is appealling. Its not my favourite though, I can't think up a favourite, there's just good and bad covers, nothing more.

Dillinger Escape Plan's cover of Come to daddy is pretty impressive, though the rest of their stuff is dross.

I thought this was a joke :(

Now, I've heard for myself otherwise, and I'd like to amend my worst cover choice.

Thank you.

NOW COME ON... THAT DOESN'T WORK YOU DUMB WHORES!

Bets could be.. Dave Matthews cover of No Rain by Blind Melon... skills!

Cake - The Distance is the best cover ever, closely followed by Faith No More - Glory Box and Goldfinger - 99 Red Balloons.

I'll speak to you this evening then. Its a taperecorder in a crowd, and one member of the audience can be heard to go "WHAT!?!" very loudly after it opens up.
