Overclockers UK? Bah!

ocUK won't be seeing any of my money again.

[rant]
I'm was going to put a massive order into them. I emailed them with details of what I wanted to buy, which is all the separate parts for a complete system (except keyboard and mouse or monitor) which I will build myself. The total of all the parts comes to £1,800. It was mostly retail packs as well and not OEM. I am basically ordering a 'money no object' system in the next few weeks (new job + graduate loan = fun fun fun). I'm including a GF3, fastest CPU they have in stock at the time, best motherboard available, 1 gig of the very best Crucial memory, Coolermaster ATC-200 case etc... basically the best item from each parts catagory (please don't hate me too much :p).
So I asked them what discount they would offer me. Here is how much discount they said they would give me - jack shit!. Not even free delivery or even some free Arctic Silver II! Can you fucking believe that! These guys are taking the piss and thier prices are not even that good. Big wow, so they can even pre-overclock it. Big deal. And figure this one out - two of there mobo/CPU/HS combos are actually cheaper if you buy the parts separatly. Eh? I have heard very good things about these guys but this seems very amature to me. When I was a PC salesman I would have bent over backwards for a sale like that. And its not like they are a high street chain either! Anyway, Scan say they can give me a nice little amount of that lot.

And?

Shop sales are very different from online sales since the margin is higher.

If j00000000000000000 owned a business would you give money off for a big order? No, me neither :)

If all the stuff you're getting is top whack they wouldn't expect you to be ordering anything else off them for while, so they wouldn't be seeing your business again for quite some time. Someone who buys a HDD here and a CPU there is much more regular trade.

I used to be a barman. The person who comes in every day and spends a fiver is MUCH more important than the party of ten who're down for the weekend and spend a few hundred on just one night of the year.

Wrong.

And btw, its stupid that a small business such as ocuk would not be bothered about a large and profitable sale. Or a smaller one for that matter. They would be crazy to turn down that for the sake of a few quid. All I asked for was a free tube of Arctic silver and pos free delivery. That would hardly make a dent in the profit. I mean, even if they gave me a GF3 at cost price they would still make a tidy profit on the rest.
It crazy. In these times of economic slowdown and the sales of PC's and PC parts down this year for the first time ever, no company can afford to turn any sale down. Especially a small business. Its only the high street chains that can turn there nose up at customers like me. In shops like Dixons PC's have virtually NO margin. They make there money by selling extended warranties. If they did not do that they would have to stop selling PC's. I know that because I worked for them for 2 years while I was at uni. I suspect thet if I spoke to someone higher up they might be more flexible and the sales guy that I dealt with could not be bothered with the hastle.
When I spoke to Dabs and Scan they laughed when I told them.

Its a good job you don't then. you would not last long!
What would you rather do? reduce your margin from, say, £150 to £100 and secure the sale. Or let them walk and get nothing?

Please don't patronise me. I've worked for them and know the average margin on PCs is 5% and on extended warranties happens to be 44%. OCUK isn't as big as dabs etc and thus have even smaller margins through lack of ability to bulk buy etc etc etc boring etc etc. PS high street chains can't turn their nose up at any one....period.

You don't know OCUKs polices in this area...perhaps they don't discount period, TUG maybe able to shed more light on this.

Look you have a choice and so did they. They didn't want to give you any thing and you decided not to buy from them.

1) OcUK neva do discounts and good on 'em cuz neither would I :)
2) They aint small now, they easily do knockin on 8-10 million squid trade a year if not more, which makes them medium sized businesswise.
3) There isn't much profit in hardware, thats why u gotta sell shitloads to make money, thing with OcUK is they get numourous orders per day which are as big as yours so I would imagine losing one is no biggie as another one will fly into the system seconds later
4) They must be doin summat right cuz jeezuz they have nice cars sitting outside! lol... at a guess from workin a few simple numbers out, the MD's are on a LOT of money per year (200-250k plus)

How do I know some of dis? Ummmmmm someone else will tell u :)

Tis jus' a uniform business practise really... one set of rules for everyone. Also gettin' discounts adds admin work etc which their ordering system aint so good for :)

So how come Dabs, Scan, and Theoverclockingstore would be more then happy to arrange a better price?

BTW Embattle, you worked for Dixons did you? When was that? Which Branch?

Oh, here we go. Mister Important has to arive at some point. And yes little boy, if you bothered to read (like you do in school) the whole thread you would have realised that I was indeed buying else where. But thanks for your concern.

Scan seem to be the most helpfull, they reckon they could give me 4-8% of the total price but won't confim the exact discount until the time of purchace. TBO thats more than I expected.
