Best Modem

Cant get ADSL or cable, stuck with crappy dial-up. Can some one please recommand a good modem/settings etc to get my ping down. thx

Diamond Super Express External 56pro. The best you will get for 56k, about 25-30 quid from lots of places. If you check their website there all kinds of extra setting strings which you can put in to help with on-line gaming.

I connect at 40000, and ping to BW (when theres a game on ffs ) at about 170-200 in CS.

Laz will tell you to get a Hayes Accura, but most peeps use the Diamond.

Tbh, if you want another box/cable/power cord cluttering up your desk, get the diamond EXTERNAL (not USB)

I prefer to have everything "neat and tidy" so went for an internal Hayes Accura V92.

Whether its internal or external, make sure it is a HARDWARE modem.

Mine connects constantly at 52000, occasionally at 50,666

Check your line wilier.

I used isdn for 2 years, although expensive and not much better than a dial up for D/L or web browsing it is ok for gaming.
I used to ping BW CS servers at 70/90, now on ADSL I get 50/70, not a huge difference can be felt in game tbh.

something that might help the 56k 'ers out there is this
ring up ur phone supplier and ask 4 the Gain on u'r phone line turned up if they say it does'nt need it .......say that all phone calls are very low in quality .
thats what i did,indoingso lowed my ping on B/W servers around 20--70 ish .....

give it a go .....not as if u got 2 shell out ££ 4 it

As for ISDN - working on it

The connection speed is solely dependent (well not quite, but for this experiment it does) on your distance from the exchange, rather than where abouts you live.

I know people close to the exchange who would get similar results to yourself, then I would get around 44kbps and then another friend who lived about 6/7 miles from the exchange could only connect at about 36kbps.

Its the luck of the draw.

An ever brightening light is appearing at the end of the tunnel for users on the slow side of the broadband divide. BT will introduce a new product called "BT MidBand" offering 128k speeds to 97% of the population. At present, there is no price indication for what appears to be an 'always on' Home Highway variant. Furthermore, BT are hailing the broadband demand tracking scheme as a great success and anticipate 90% broadband coverage by mid-2005. 16 local exchanges are due to be enabled under the new scheme and hopefully many more in the not so distant future.

However, I can almost piss on the exchange from my bedroom. The modem is actually CAPPED to 52000 - had it connect at 54000 previously.

Not always a good idea to boost the gain - a lot of the time it just increases the NOISE on the line and can cause a lot of lower range modems to disconnect

Pace 56 Voive Internal ISA 0wned them all... sept I don't think they make them any more... I have one on my secondary comp... my primary doesn't have an ISA slot

used to get around 90-120 in QW... which was nice

supra express modems aree indeed the dogs.

back in the day i used to get ~100ms pings to blueyonder servers from the by dialup. good solid modems.

Connect at whatever speed m8, you still get 200 ping in game Isdn connects at 64k and I get 45-80 ping most of the time Get isdn Laz, you know you want to !!

with respect Bods, I live 5 miles from my exchange thats why I only connect at 40000, my dad live 2 miles from it, he connects (using a win modem ffs) at 52000, so your argument is weak.
