Yes it would. It's not a case of dragging things to the recycle bin. Data retreival goes a long way past just searching his C: drive for the text string "hahahha i killed my daughter". Without serious professional (and discreet) help, he couldn't cover anything up in time.

Yay I love how data doesn't really disappear when you delete it Would have to totally format the drives and do loads more crap to it too.

you'd need a 'zero fill' your drive..that is fill the whole hard drive wit 0's

Any professional would be able to spot the difference between a harddrive that had been wiped a day before and one that had been around for a while. (file dates for starters).

Handing in a freshly erased harddrive woudn't do much good for his "i'm innocent" speech after all.

Except on a zero filled drive there would be no dates, so they would be rather suspect of a drive with no files at all on it, except possibly the OS and a shopping list with what they are going to spend the proceeds from the book/movie/Ok magazine exclusive funeral coverage pics deals.

One would assume that if you were going to the trouble of zero erasing the drive you might try re-installing some stuff on it to make it seem slightly more genuine.

Clear indication as to what section of the community hangs out on FH tho.. we've managed to turn an I killed my kids thread into a geeky data recovery techniques thread.

It wouldn't matter, if he did do a good cleaning job on the drive he really wouldn't have to do anything else, they could speculate on the reason for his actions but proving he zero filled a hard drive means he likely erased something he didn't want anyone to see but that's as far as it would go.

Anyhow he would probably just hit delete and then empty the recycle bin like most users, it's not like he works in IT and might have a clue.
