I think this is going to be the case with lots of things in future. New standards will come along all the time.

Radio is trying to go from analogue => DAB (MP2) => DAB+ (AAC). Technologies improve, codecs improve to store the same data in less space to allow either higher quality or more choice.

TV is the same. Analogue => Digital => HD. What happens in 10-20 years time if improvements to resolutions become more popular and 1080p seems like an ancient format?

Think of all those new TV's and PVR's with integrated freeview tuners that will have to be replaced - thats where the cost jacks up!

Most LCD TVs (and Plasmas) have a much shorter lifespan than CRTs so they'll need replacing anyway (which is one reason why the manufacturers love them; built in obscelecence), and your 40 or even 60GB PVR isn't going to be up to the job of storing loads of HD content, so they'll need replacing as well (look at Sky HD).

And this may well be a moot point; the move to DVB-T2 isn't a done deal (its only just gone into consultation) and it may be that MPEG-4 on existing multiplexes is chosen as the Euro standard for the medium term anyway (which would work with existing STBs).

the money spent on iplayers not the beebs fault, the orignal idea behind it was good and ahead of anything else at the time (somat like 6-7 years ago) they prolly would have rolled it out in 18months after that were it not for the watchdog type thingie that keeps a keen eye over wot the beeb does.
