The end of the second round and the victor of the RPG's is... Baldur's Gate. I apologise to those that did not agree with me, but it was a hard task to cram so many good games down to a mere 10. I believed I put in the main influential ones, but I know I cannot ever satisfy everyone. And I am trying not to put rely on preferences of my own as from the beat-em-ups I wasn't too fond of the SNK game and Virtua Fighter, and though I may be flamed I am not a big fan of Baldur's Gate.
Anywho, on to the First Person Shooters and our 10 this time are.
Descent - Released in the mid 90's "Descent" had the most unique setting for this style of game. Instead of being a man on the ground you had the controls of a ship. This gave you total freedom in the direction you were facing, causing a little nausea to begin with
Doom - A landmark in the FPS genre and for a long time was the benchmark that all other FPS games were judged by. Today the game is thought of fondly and has been advanced by "Doom 3". And of course, who can forget the ultimate weapon, the "BFG 9000".
Far Cry - Rumoured to have been crated as a model to show off the latest graphic capabilites at the time, "Far Cry" boasts a highly developed enemy A.I. and opened ended missions. However it brought a few complaints of a too steep difficulty curve.
Goldenye 007 - A revolutionary and one of the few games that was popular on the ill-fated N64. An in depth mission system and the multi-player which allowed you to go head-to-head with three friends using various bad guys from previous Bond movies made this a popular game.
Half Life - Using a form of the "Quake" engine (like many games did) "Half Life" was heralded as an atmospheric game and it's style went on to influence many other similar games. It was also hailed for the content of its multi-player side.
Halo - Sometimes labeled as repetitive, the original was the game that launched the X-Box. Supported by X-Box Live, it went on to be one of the most important and most critically acclaimed game to be release.
Metroid Prime - What "Halo" did for the X-Box, "Metroid Prime" did for the GameCube, although the game is labeled by Nintendo as not being a FPS. Despite unusual controls, the game became a popular game for the GameCube
Quake - The game that many games seem to be based upon and coined it's own phrase of a game using the "Quake Engine" for their own FPS games. The first FPS to use 3D models for players and the world itself.
Unreal Tournament - This FPS was different to many others for it relied mostly on multi-player deathmatch scenarios. While not graphically as adept as many others this game gave the player many different styles of multi-player gaming.
Wolfenstein - The game that is considered to be the one that popularized the FPS genre on the PC. You were put in the shoes of an American soldier who had to escape from a Nazi stronghold.
