Basic networking :(

I got a "Lan Kit" for my two pc's upstairs. Ive fitted the network cards, and installed drivers etc, and they both "know" they are there. The network switch is installed, and both pc's are connected , and there are lights on to tell me they are both connected.
However, when I click on Network places the pc's can see themselves, but not each other :(
Any ideas anyone ?

make sure they're in the same 'logical' network. ie. give one pc an IP number of say, 10.0.0.10 with a subnet of 255.255.255.0 and the other an IP of 10.0.0.20 with a 255.255.255.0 subnet. also, sometimes windows won't 'see' the other pc if it's not sharing anything. speaking of which, iirc 'client for ms networks' and file&printer sharing needs to be installed. good luck :)

Hey throdgrain

Just a flying visit :( I believe it's a configuration error, as everything on the hardware side seems fine. Make sure, for example, both computers are on the same workgroup and are using the same protocols (Network Settings > Right click LAN adapter > Properties).

Post again soon, sorry!

Yep ive done that mate, one is Win 98 and the other is Win ME, dunno if that meakes a difference...
I assumed once you had installed you would just "see" the other pcs under "entire network" ?

Another flying visit ;) I know XP comes with a utility whereby you setup the network on one machine, it creates a special disk for you, which you then run on the other machine to ensure everything works correctly. Does ME ship with that sort of utility, do you know? (in XP, it's the last stage of the Network Setup Wizard, as I recall).

Kind Regards

its a wee bit broke...

one comp can only see the access point,
