Barrysworld Cup

What do people think to the idea of Barrysworld running cup competitions alongside the leagues.

These wouldn't have to run over the same timespan as the seasons - they could run once a year so as not to generate to high a frequency of games to allow clans to meet their other league requirements.

This would allow the clans from all the Divs to be mixed and while one would expect to see the top clans come out on top still there is a lot of potential for upsets plus the added tension of knowing that progression counts on a single game.

Probably best if their was one cup competition per game style ie ctf, tdm, q3f etc.

I've run a few cup competitions in the past, indeed the last 2 QW compo's i ran were the UKCL and MCW Cups.

The problem is with Q3 that each season we see a massive new entrance to each league (be it DM or CTF). Whilst a cup competition would be good, quite often the new entrants are in the lower levels of the skill level and in some ways a cup would be unfair on them, especially if they are new to online competition.

There is the counter arguement that cups would allow us to weed out the defaulters from the committed clans, but you then have the problem that by the time the cup competition is completed (unless its run in some very watered down, perhaps unfair single 20min game style) with say 120 clans your looking at 3-4 weeks probably. With a rest week after that and before it you then see about 6-8 weeks between cup registration opening and the competition finishing. By that time you would have a whole host of new clans wanting to join the league so the process would in some respects be of little value.

Running them during the league has been mooted, we may adopt something like this for the end of the season in future, but with so many clans it becomes a very difficult thing to organise.

Hey Bigfoot,

Thanks for taking the time to reply :)

I appreciate the concerns you have especially re the amount of teams..... a couple of points tho;

First the fact that newbie teams will go up against l33t clans is the way of a cup. Leagues place evenly matched teams in divisions - cups are a big free for all - is no different in the FA Cup etc.

I dont think a single 20 min game is unfair - its more likely to generate an upset than having say 3 x 20 min games - the law of averages predicts that the more able team will come out on top the more games that are played. With a single game the underdog could gain a dominant position on the map and hold off the favourites to claim advancement in the cup - knife edge tension and upsets is what a cup is all about.........

Im not saying a cup competition will be easy to administrate and a lot of planning and fine tuning will be required. You are Barrysworld tho and IMHO the most advanced olg gaming body out there at the moment. It is your place to define and drive the future..........bring on the new ideas.........dont run with the pack - inspire..........prove that these things can be done and done well.

U have the corporate backing now - OLG is huge and set to get bigger - if u build it they will come......if not then someone else will build it........

Hi,

I may be wrong but I think BW have added a cup comp - check the TDM league rules - states cup competition at end of season from season 3 onwards.

If so; N1 guys.....

Should be good. :)
