Barrys CS servers rant

Hmmm...played some CS last night on BW 1 and 10 and numerous others in an attempt to get a good game with a few mates. What is it about CS that provokes players into leaping onto servers without a grasp of the basics? I didnt do it. Like de_dust last nite. 2 camping CT's and one T left. T plants the bomb and neither CT comes out from his tent to even look at whats going on. Infuriating. So often these days CS just becomes a Deathmatch game. If someone asks in game "How do I defuse the bomb?" then I have seen 3 or 4 ppl all volunteer the correct information without any snide remarks. The same with most newbie questions in fact. Its very rare to see a newbie get a mouthfulf on a pub server, if it does happen the perpetrator is usually from the good ol' US (sorry Zenophobic stereotyping I know, but its true). The morale of the tale is IF IN DOUBT ASK. PLEASE. Rescue those hossies, plant that bomb. Play Q3 if you want to DM. You will enjoy the game all the more, as will your teamates. The game is so much better, played with a bit of cooperation, instead of gung ho charges and camping individuals.

I agree with you fully, and think I can offer at least part of an explanation. The reason CS turns into DM on a public server is simple - people go for individual frags. They want to be at the top when the map ends, so they really don't give a crap about the rest of their team or what their particular objective is - they just want to kill as many guys as possible. Hence you usually get two teams of 8 headless chickens running around randomly just blazing away at the opposition.

It's highlighted most of all when you get 2 or 3 clan members playing together on one team, because they usually cut swathes through the opposition simply by virtue of playing together.

Iv'e been wanting to say this for ages, but never have i had the chance, but stu has given me a reason to post it:) CS on pubs is crap compared to Q2 flag or team DM on pubs. I hear the calls of "QUAKE PLAYERS WOULDN'T KNOW TEAM PLAY IF IT HIT THEM IN THE FACE" Well thats bullshit, iv'e heard this so many times on cs and tfc servers. Fact is Far more team play goes on in q2 flag and team dm servers than cs or tfc servers. Sure stu is right about a few clan players being on one side makes the difference, but all it realy does is make the game totally one sided. When i played flag every night you could nearly allways have 2 teams that were of equal skill and both used team play tactics. Imo most players that come out with the crap, quake players don't know shit ect ect... are just mouthing, only because there playing a team game, Not in actualy what there doing when playing the game, Eg not helping the team one bit.

I'm fairly new to CS (b7.1), but I've played QW Team Clan for many years and EQ for 18months so I know about team work for the end goal.

I rarely camp, unless I get me one of those big pea shooters that LPB love. Being HPW I rarely get them, unless our team is slapping the other team senseless when I let my hair down (as they say) and play a different way.

Bomb Map
:T = Plant Bomb
:C = Camp Bomb Sites (Or strategic areas)

Hostage Map
:T = Gaurd Hostages
:C = Rescue Hostages

VIP Map
:T = Camp Escape Route/Assassinate VIP
:C = Protect VIP

If people would stick to these rules the game would be better for everyone involved.

The Gungho player will always kill a few, but eventually they let the side down. Many time I've sneaked through the water of Aztec and planted the bomb near the CT starting point, while they all run around the T spawn looking for me.

An example of a map the T's should win hands down every time is assault. No T should leave the safety of the Building. Gaurding main entrance, back entrance and venting.

An example of a map the CT's should win hands down is Dust, 2 spots, as long as they get enough into the 2nd bomb site, and then keep a few hanging around the ramp towards the first bomb site, the chances of losing the map are slim.

However things never go smoothly with GungHo l33t CS players ;)

These are my opinions :) flame me! heh

and then some

Some muppet on CS server ran over nearly all his team with the APC then ran it off the bridge killing the other 2 in the back and then drove the APC into the lift (siege) and spent the remaining whole time trying to activate the lift and get into it from under the apc.

I think it would improve the situation if you got points for completing objectives, and lost points for killing hostages.
I know it'll never be implemented but it would mean that you could do well on the scoredboard by playing the game properly (completing objectives), whereas at the moment you have to play it like DM to do well in the scoreboard; and when it comes down to it the only way people rate each other on pub servers is by their position in the scores, not by how good a team player they are.

Well put that man, that in essence is the idea behind the forming of the NTC (newbie training clan) here we aim to give newer players some training in the map layouts, best tactics, best routes, etc. I joined this because when i first started (many moons a go) i was frustrated by the top players ignoring my requests for help. I would be very happy now, if i could perhaps interest some of you in joining our mighty crusade and begin helping the newer players

Heaven forbid! You mean like 10 points for a flag capture? Instead of sniping on the 2fort balcony all map people may actually want to complete objectives? :)

I'm gonna give FLF another try - its whole gameplay setup MUST encourage teamwork yes? And of late I havent been able to find a single decent game of CS on any pubs. Where have the VETS and FuSe guys been playing lately?

Yes I know it would end up kind of like TFC, but with real guns.
Thing is I would be quite happy with that.
FLF seems to offer a good in between though, although the only map I have played seemed very dark (although it may have been a night map)
The way you regain health while near friendly players will make people stick together if they want to survive (at least their is a visual indicator of how you are beneitting from being in a group). Only trouble is when you are used to CS, and unload both your primary weapons on an enemy and he still doesn't go down, it is a bit annoying.

I don't wanna come over as being biased (being FLF liaison) but I think FLF makes for a good balance between TFC and CS. OK so it's not as realistic as CS, but it promotes teamwork. You have to work as a team to complete the objective of capturing/defending the points, no single good player is gonna rule.

There's no point in Deathmatching on FLF, it just doesn't work. The only way of your team winning a round is to cap/defend the points in the given time, for the person you just wiped is only gonna respawn again in the maps given time delay.

And if it's frags to baost about then capturing points or killing the enemy in the process or vicinity of a cap point will earn you extra bonus frags, more than just DM'ing/camping in the middle of the map somewhere.

FLF is new, on it's first public release, and a patch with various additions/fixes is due today/tomorrow. Give it a try.

.... oh and yeah, some of the maps are dark, particularly Snow. At the moment all official maps are going on the servers until we start to get feedback on which maps are/aren't liked and mapcycles can be changed in due time.

My favorite idiot is the VIP who thinks it's deathmatch and is the only CT left.

Bahh thats when i used to rack up the frags in CS, on the vip maps, because of my ping most times i would end up being the first Vip, eg im as powerfull as any other player, in the first round you start with more ammo, maybe a bug i dunno, but i remember once i racked up 12 frags in the first two rounds as the vip without deing:eek: Being a DM guy as the vip helps no end till they all get fcking machine guns, then your fcked:D unless there crap that is:)
