Those older readers may remember Barry Sheene.

Former world motorcycling champion Barry Sheene has died after a long battle against cancer.

The 52-year-old won the World Motorcycle Championships twice in the 1970s and became famous for overcoming his numerous crashes on the track.

Sheene, awarded an MBE in 1978, died in hospital on Australia's Gold Coast from cancer of the throat and stomach.

Sad indeed. That man entertained me manys a rainy Saturday afternoon and sparked off my interest in motorbikes.

Im still getting over Joey Dunlops death and that was two years ago:(

Real shame. I met him a couple of times when I was a kid (a friend of my Dad's was UK sidecar champion so we used to go to bike races a lot), really genuine, always had time to talk to people. With him and James Hunt gone, its like a piece of my childhood's gone missing.

Even sadder when you consider he chose not to use conventional medicine to treat his cancer. I wonder if that was a wise decision?

Anyway, great bloke, sad to see him go.

My mum even watched that, who has no interest in racing and pathologically hates motorbikes. IIRC they were fighting for about 6 laps to the finish, each corner the order changed, twas indeed class. Late 70's was it?

He was a fucking good bike racer m8, in the days when we had , well, fucking good sportsmen.
He was motorcycle Grand Prix series winner in 1976 and 1977 I think.

Sat on , but not owned :)

I had an RD250LC for a while, put me off 2strokes, power is in such a narrow band, and rebuilds expensive. I prefer a lazy style :) Thats why next time I think I'll be having a twin. Although it's a while off yet, years maybe :(

I was at Silverstone when he had his "almighty", I didnt see it, but we saw his bike afterwards. Hell of a mess of a Suzuki RG500.

Its a sad day indeed.
