Okay, seriously, back in my day, st00dents lived off cheap and nasty food, rented cruddy rooms with their friends in the shittiest hovels near to their Uni and considered themselves lucky if they had central heating (me and my friends were VERY unlucky :/ ).

My day was 4 years ago.

My brother is still in Uni.

He has just bought a mercedez benz.

He has a widescreen TV that is bigger than my fucking desk.

WTF?!?! :eek7:

I ate Tilda. The rest had no choice but meet my demands before I demanded more meat.

How times have changed since my wee days at university...oh my...

I was in shitsville, literally, had fuck all money to my name, had to work most fri and sat nights at a night club to make ends meet, and downed a bottle of cheap lonk before a night out on a fiver. Yes a fiver! Oh how the student lived! And your bro bought a merc??? fuck me! Give him a slap and tell him he is a disgrace to the name of studenthood....me and my mate needed a car so we bought a y reg volks polo for 90 quid BETWEEN us!!! Thats how poor we were. Then, in my third year, i went one better and got a sierra 1.6 for 1 pound. Didnt have a license, insurance, tax or anything, and was fun until the cozzers stopped me.

Oh the sweet days of finding ways to make money, and make money last. And the funny thing is we all managed it.

Still, today i am very poor and wasteful with money - i just have so much of it ;)

Give me some then. :p And I have abused him at end for his non-studenty ways. Bastard. Jeez...the house I lived in Uni was probably the house that Rising Damp was based on. Seriously! One of the writers of the programme used to live in it (or next to it...i forget). One day teh gas man comes along and says we need more ventilation in our living room. So what does the landlord do? Knocks a fucking hole in the wall with a sledge hammer. Helloooo? Middle of winter in N.Wales with fuck all heating and now we have a gaping hole in our house? Nice one, fucknuckle. :eek7:

And my brother? He has a nice house in an exclusive East End mews, overlooking a canal and with high walls and a nice security gate so that the local riff raff can't get in. Due to some quirk with British Gas he also gets all the heating and hot water he could possibly need...for free.

Jealous much? :p

You had gas?

you didnt have it that bad...in one bedroom the floor had subsided leaving a 1 inch gap between it and the skirting and we had no gas or double glazing, so, and this is no shit, during ther winter all four of us slept in our jeans jumpers and coats at night....was crazy man but i loved it for some wierd reason.

Students get all kinds of loans thrown at them nowadays, shock will come when the time comes to repay them :)

A student loan from the Student Loans comp is no biggie, but the banks will really start to squeeze once you leave uni.

Bastards.

Poor students ?

lol, u all lived like a charm! I had to get up every morning at 04:00 to deliver milk bottles, then at 06:00 i had to go my paper route. at 08:00 i went to school, mostly hungry cuz there were no time to eat be4 i met.

then home from school, off to the suermarket to work from 15:00 to 20:00 EVERY DAY but weekends. In the weekends it was more fun, then i worked at KFC (from 10:00 to 18:00) where i could eat all i want - and belive me, i had to!!! had to fill up for the comming week!

and my money from all this ? well, had to pay for the appartment (if u can call a hell hole that) for me, my sis and mum. Also had to pay for food, insurrance etc, cuz neither my mum nor sis worked! and sometimes when i was unlucky, dad came to visit to take the rest of our cash! and god help us, if we hadnt any!!!!!

so u see... i can only laugh at ur stories...

ohh, did i say we didnt have warm water nor elektricity ?! and the water was brown (from rust (sp?)) so we couldnt drink it either. had to hope for rain every night to fill up our milk bottles (i "borrowed" from work) who stood on the roof of our building!

so... dont come to me talking about "hard times"!

some things i dont get:

students get discounts at places like Pizza Hut and HMV ok.. why cant i have the same discounts now i aint got a job? reasons would probably be.. well u aint working so u shouldnt be shopping here.. but students still get the discounts? hmm.. company's can obviously afford to sell discounted goods to students.. so why not everybody?

another thing is.. up here in NE England.. there's an absolute SHITLOAD of *student nights* in bars and clubs.. pay £10 to get in.. all u can drink inside.. where is all this bloody money coming from? they always very busy nights.

now bearing all that in mind.. i used to work for NHS.. dealing with claims for refunds of prescriptions and doing certificates for students / part time workers etc... peeps who dont get a full wage anyhoo.. just helps with medical bills.

was always students who would argue the toss if their claim failed and they werent entitled to free prescriptions.. but i'm skint they would say.. aint suprised if you on the town every night, buying pizza's from pizza hut and cd's from hmv..

used to get funny when they would get their mother's to write an official letter of complaint to the manager.. or else they would write to their MP.. used to make me laugh, was soooooo scared :)

You were lucky! We lived for three months in a rolled-up newspaper in a septic tank! We used to have to go up every morning, at six o'clock and clean the newspaper, go to work down the mill, fourteen hours a day, week in, week out, for six pence a week, and when we got home, our dad would slash us to sleep with his belt!

Luxury! We used to have to get up out of the lake at three o'clock in the morning, clean the lake, eat a handful of hot rubble, work twenty hours a day at the mill, for two pence a month, come home, and dad would beat us around the head and neck with a broken bottle, if we were lucky!

Well, of course, we had it tough! We used to have to get up out of the shoebox in the middle of the night, and lick the road clean with our tongues! We had to eat half a handful of freezing cold rubble, work twenty-four hours a day at the mill for four pence every six years, and when we got home, our dad would slice us in two with a breadknife!

Right! I had to get up in the morning, at ten o'clock at night, half an hour before I went to bed, eat a lump of cold poison, work twenty-nine hours a day down the mill and pay the mill owner for permission to come to work, and when we got home, our dad would kill us and dance about on our graves, singing Hallelujah!

Aah. And you try to tell the young people of today that, and they won't believe you!

Sorry but Monty Python's > Meduza's.

Companys and shops give students cheap shit because they think that with their degree in Golf Studies or Surfing or Philiosophy they will make oodles of cash and come back to spend it in later life on full price stuff - same reason banks try to grab you while you're a student.

The main difference is that students of yesteryear had these things called GRANTS. Granted (hah) they were less money than today's student loans (in terms of value) so you lived like tramps.

However todays students get a rather tasty sum to live off which provides a much more comfortable lifestyle - HOWEVER, unlike their wrinkley chums they will have to PAY IT BACK.

The difference between a student and a nogood unemployed layabout such as yourself - although minimal, does exist because the student every now and then gets up before noon and does a bit of work.
