Ok i have narrowed down my choices to the Samsung HT-TX35R Home Theatre System - £214.59 & optical switchbox:
dabs.com - Samsung HT-TX35R Home Theatre System (HT-TX35R)
and the YAMAHA AV61 package £219.95 :
YAMAHA AV61 PACKAGE (RXV361 HOME CINEMA RECEIVER AND NSP110 5.1 SPEAKER SYSTEM) - available from Superfi UK Visit http://www.superfi.co.uk/index.cfm/page/moreinfo.cfm/product_id/3396 for details

This is to achieve 5.1 Surround for my ps3, xbox 360, skybox, htpc and wii for a samsung m87. I want to retain the best quality sound and 1080p so my devices are going to be connected directly to the tv for video but the sound will be connected to the system via the optical ports

budget is around the £200 mark, if you were in my position what would you choose.
Thanks in advance

Out of those two I would chose the Yamaha, it is at least a proper a/v receiever, although a low end one. I despise those all in one's like the samsung.

No, get the one with more functionality. The yamaha will allow you more choice over your inputs and outputs, and sound better.

thanks all,
i looked at the 605 originally but i really cant justify £350 on the amp then speakers on top
The 505 i will have to look into but its £240 cheapest i could find, which would be another £100-200 (no point buying poor speakers for a good amp) and then there's the sub, again out of the budget which i dont want to go above £300 but closer to £200

Specs look good, have a read on avforums and see if there is a thread about it. The onkyo's currently represent great value for money. Top quality sound plus HDMI.

To be honest you could get either onkyo and pair it with cheap speakers for now, upgrade them when you can. It would be better for you in the long term to get an amp that supports hdmi.

My point was that both of those are quite crap but for a person who even considers getting those they both will serve well -> the better looking one would be better choice, imo.

Exactly what I thought :p

I curse the day when I heard what good surround sound systems sound like - costed me ~3000€ :S

They are both not crap though, as a entry level reciever the yamaha is fine. And it is not an all in one solution that offers limited options.

The better looking one would be the better choice? That is how crap products are sold to hood winked consumers. He asked for advice, so offer him some, not the sales pitch of your average comet sales assistant.

That Yamaha is actually rather crap and all he is looking for is a receiver with optical input(s) to hook consoles up with.

He is currently happy with eating shit for breakfast (=Hercules 5.1-system), which one you think he will notice first - that little bit of cream on top of it or sexy shape of the shit?

Personally I would go for Yamaha simply because it actually looks way better and I would never ever even consider getting that cheap&junk looking Samsung. I know lots of people who prefers that looks and wont notice (or care about) the difference between 5000€ and 500€ sound systems and for those people I naturally recommend getting that one instead.

Actually no, he is looking for good sound quality within his budget. Try reading the original post. If you can't give good advice, then why bother at all?

He is happy with that setup apart from the lack of optical input and both of the above ones offers better yet rather crap quality (I'm talking from experience and I suppose you do too?).

There is absolutely nothing wrong with my advice (your advice = get functionality that probably wont be needed, my advice = get the one that pleases your eyes since you will probably look at those for a rather long time) and I'm sure that Chronictank will filter out the advices he aint looking for - surely that's not your or my job?

But yeah, I will obey your wish and shut the fuck up - said my advice and got nothing to add.

.

All fairness they were best price/performance at the time :p
Cheers for the advice all, i have been thinking about it and i think i will get the 505(ta Ch3tan) as it will kill a few birds with one stone (save me getting switching boxes and macroing them onto the remote) and push the budget to £300 and get a set of speakers and a amp for £100.
