Far be it for me to look for the correct forum to post this in so here's the deal

Back in the day when i was knee high to grass hopper I was using a Mac and it had this marvelous fearture of scheduling a startup and shutdown time.

I have win2k at home, is there an equivalent program i can get to emulate the apple mac skillz?

Thanks and stuff

put a timer on your ac socket and turn "auto power-on after failure" on in the bios ;)

sorry mate, far be it for me to pull your leg like that, I wouldn't know of a proggy (at springs to mind). a shutdown/reboot can be scheduled in unix though (not that that helps at all )

You can make a shortcut that will shutdown your machine. Google should be able to find it.

Then you could just use Task Scheduler to run the shortcut at a specified time.

If you have anything open that needs saving then it won't work as you'll get the "Do you want to Save?" message. But other than that it should be ok.

Shut downs is easy though... it's the boot-up that's the problem.

A bit hard, but for boot-up you could either use the Wake-On-Lan of the network card or Wake-On-Modem functions. Wouldn't really be able to schedule that, although with the Wake-On-Modem you could phone your PC your start it up.

Failing that, build a robotic arm with a timer built in that can push the power button :)

Cheers boys

Yeah sutdown isn't a problem, its just getting it to boot in the morning.

I used he Wake-On-Lan thing before but it didn't always work. Will try it again.

Heh, modem? MODEM!"$? what's that?

Most modern BIOS have a wake up time as part of the ACPI setup. I have a machine that turns on automatically at around 16:00 and powers down again at around 23:00.

The only problem with ACPI power on is you must shut down cleanly from the OS for it to work. Hitting the off button or a power failure will, in most cases, not "re-enable" the next start up time.

Out of interest what do you need to use wake on lan.. I mean I have a WOL header on both pootas and an NIC with WOL support in each but how do I get it to work? :) There's an option to enable in the BIOS i know... just wandering what software you need to initiate it....
