Not that unusual I think - happens a number of times a year - in theory we are at solar maximum this year so should be a few more than average but you need the right viewing conditions.

It's unusual in how far south it may be visible though.

Hah, I've just shouted through the room to the missus to ask her if she wants to go see it; we'd need to drive for an hour to get a good enough view though away from light pollution. From what I've seen, the best views are from a good bit further north from where we are.

I've seen them before as a kid, just spectacular when you see them for the first time. Bit emotional actually.

Wasn't to be, didn't really have enough time to get to the darkest areas and my view north would have been obscured if I was in a Glen. Next best thing was up the big hill near me (1000ft up) but the amount of light pollution from Grangemouth oil refinery is too damn high!

Facing north was just a big bright orange mess when I ran off a shot (didn't see anything with the naked eye), but I took a shot facing south that had a bit less pollution but still a fair amount. You can see Orion, it's nebula and other associated star systems.

Aye too much sodium light creeping in at the bottom of that shot. If it's clear this weekend then I'm going to drive further north.

According to the BBC news just now, tonight's weather is ideal for the phenomenon if it occurs.

ofc Big G is telling big porky-pies, mostly about the non-existence of sister-pics, but that aside I am not sure that the BBC does localized weather.

as for Clown, currently speeding in the general direction of Scotland...I'm more or less certain that he's going to be lost in a fog bank for most of the night and will possibly be bumraped by an equally lost roadworks major :)

I must have missed that bit. I only caught the bragging that most of the northern UK could see the Aurora.

Actually the best place for astronomy is in the Lowlands in Dumfries & Galloway which has a certified dark sky park.

Why must government websites be so badly designed and implemented? Argh!

It also contains a few mountain bike trails. I keep looking to go up there and camp out, but my mate has got bored of mountain biking :(

I'd go with you Tom, but I fear what you mean by "camp out" :(
