I posted this in the tech forums, completely forgetting we have a console section..

So my PS3 and 360 are both running through my PC screen VIA HDMI and the audio is now making me cry.

Anyone know of a way to get them (both) to run through my external speakers?

Would be great help (A solution to both would be awesome, as buying the 360 one alone costs £50 or so :()

The issue isn't the TV ^^ TV has all the connectors I need. It's getting the consoles into the speakers (2.1) I'm having issues with

Well with the 360 you simply use the AV out ( the orginal one that came with the 360) to output the audio, and the HDMI for video. For the ps3 I think you will need to use optical out. I will have a look when I get home though.

What input do your current 2.1 speakers accept?

The problem with that Chet, is that the original 360 AV leads don't fit into the 360 with the HDMI also plugged in ^^ - Speakers only allow 3.5mm atm (were dedicated PC speakers)

Was hoping there was some external kit I could use or something

Erm yes they do OD. My 360 has the AV connector for optical audio out and the HDMI plugged in at the same time. MS designed it that way so people could have 5.1 sound as their hdmi only outputs stereo sound.

You could get an adaptor that converts the 360 and ps3 stereo jacks to 3.5mm, and a splitter/switch to allow you to switch between them. Maplins should stock that stuff.

Do as i say it works, the sounds travels through the hdmi to the tv and travels out throught the headphone out jack to 2.1 speakers, i had that exact setup before my optic headphones

The last update for the PS3 lets you specify different audio outs so you should be able to use your HDMI for picture and use the composite lead that the PS3 came with for stereo sound.

As for the 360, if it really doesn't fit, just crack the case open on the audio dongle and wrap some electrical tape around it. Should fit fine then.

Aye, it's the original 360 comp cable. The lead is just too chunky and doesn't let me put both the HDMI and compo cable in. Is annoying. Have tried hundreds of times and nothing.

Didn't know that about the PS3 actually.

MS must have changed the design because I have done it for my cousins pro unit and do it on my elite. The hdmi cable is above the ethernet port on these, not above the av port.

Think if I gave MS a call and said mine died, they'd send me a slim line version?

^ do this to be honest. Just crack the plastic open, everything will still work fine. Also shave down the rubber on your hdmi plug if it is too fat.

Cause he wants to have both the ps3 and 360 hooked up. So he would need a TV with two stereo input jacks that allowed him to output via the headphone jack, fine if he does have that. I suppose with either solution easiest way would be to get a splitter or switch for the inputs.

What's the attachment?

I've only got 1 headphone jack (iirc) on the screen, amongst everything else. A switch would be perfect (hell, a tri switch would be even better so I can swap between PC/PS3/360) but I'm not sure what to look for.

what are your PC speaker connections? standard jack? if so just plug them in, no need to switch anything as the channel decides what sound is out

Yeah Sparx is right, I was thinking of taking the stereo outs from the consoles, but you don't have to as they carry stereo sound over the HDMI. Just plug your speakers into the headphone out with a 3.5mm to 3.5mm, the TV will automatically output all sound through that.

No no no OD. You are missing the point. You need a splitter that takes 2x3.5mm jacks. You plug your pc and headphone out from your tv into it, and your speakers. That way it all works with minimal cost. All you need to buy is one 3.5mm to 3.5mm lead and a splitter.

Hush now, if we couldn't break things open and make new leads with paperclips and bits of tape we wouldn't be real men.
