Im thinknig of buying one of these CPU's shortly, and I need to know if it will cause me problems. I have a Asus A7V333 motherboard. Im pretty sure I can put the cpu straight in there, but do I have to upgrade the bios ? At the moment I have an Athlon XP 2.0+ and my current bios appears to be ACPI Bios revision 1005, according to Sisoft Sandra :)
Please treat this question as if it was from a total noob, the most complicated thing ive ever done on a pc was fit a video card or a Terminal adpator :)

According to the ASUS website the motherboard has a 266/200 Mhz Front Side Bus - you need to check whether the 2700+ is a 333FSB model or not - or whether there are two versions of it (a 266 FSB and a 333 FSB).

I *think* that the 333 FSB models need to have a 333 FSB motherboard. But check :)

Yep the 2700 is a 333 fsb. So I need to flash bios, or will it just not work .. ?

Mate I have so much money ....
Heh J/K :)
I just DONT KNOW !! Ive read websites all day long and im none the wiser. partly about how to do a bois flash in the first place !
Maybe I should buy a XP2400+ as that certainly is 266 fsb, and is only a hundred quid or so . Even then i'll still have to flash the bios, and its that that is confusingf me most.
The thing is with the old 2.0xp I want to get a cheap mobo and update another pc I have, so it would work out quite well in the long run.
Will where are you ?? :)

Bios Flashes are easy, you start up with a dos boot disk then basically run a small program, as long as you have the right bios, and the power doesn't go off you're fine.

To my knowledge a BIOS flash wont increase the FSB on the motherboard.

As Scoob says, doing it is scary, but in reality very easy.

Use a pure DOS boot disk, run a small program and you're done :) The risks are that:

If you don't run a pure (as in driverless) version of DOS you can crash the BIOS flasher and break it. I did this. Don't do the same. (I chose "Restart In MS MODE" in Windows 98...)

Use DR DOS, which is designed for this exact purpose :) http://www.bootdisks.com

However, although Embattle will recommend updating the BIOS anyway, I don't think it will enable a faster FSB CPU so you may well be stuck with a slower model.

If you have no use for that 2000xp Ill buy it off you....just name your price.

As far as flashing bios goes just follow the instructions EXACTLY as they are and you shouldnt have any problem.

Yes, make sure that you pick the one for your OS.
