They released video drivers that let you see through walls in OpenGL games. Cunts.

The drivers let you press a button to see through walls etc - but there is no way of detecting it from servers so they cant be kicked.

I know very little about software DVD - though I remember seeing one on Scan.co.uk for abut £6

No offence but common, people who want to cheat in CS will cheat. Asus drivers or otherwise, it realy makes no odds, there's allways something out there that will give you some sort of nasty advantage:( Btw those orginal drivers wern't that hard to find:( sum numbnut posted them at reactor critical:p

I think the majority of online players don't cheat. I also believe that they would if they thought they could get away with it.

Asus may be on to a winner here.

No..I'm not buying an Asus card either.

Yep i belive many good players would cheat given the chance, if there's no way they could get caught:p
You only have to look at the way many good players abuse the game with do easy work 100% of the time scripts. I allways find it strange that a 100% of the time(or as good as bot) isn't classed in the same range as a 100% of the same time perfect genade lob, or jump exactly the same time as the jet in t2 which makes your jetpack energy MUCH more efficient than if you don't do it perfect, thus giving you a massive advantage:p I understand that gren throws, jumps are easy to pull off, but try doing it when your being chased by somebody firing disks, or rockets up your ass, not so easy ehh, but hey with a script, the presure your under means jack;)

When i heard about ASUS drivers being f00ked up, i thought it was a bug. But i looked at the register the other day and to my disbelief i saw this...

At the time, ASUS boasted: "There are three special weapons for ASUS VGA cards' users -- Transparent View, Wireframe View, and Extra Light. If you do not have an ASUS VGA card -- be careful! Never compete in the 3D games with anyone who has an ASUS VGA card. Because the only result is to loose."

...I can't believe that ASUS are exploiting us to make profits. Like Wij, i am looking at new socket A mobo's atm, i could either choose Abit KT7a RAID or the ASUS K7V. ASUS can fuck off now, i am not going to buy anything from them.

Also i would have thought other companies would be able to take them to court? since there is money to be won in online gameing, it MUST be against the law to cheat in online games.

If you were at the register, then you should have seen the snip about the player models ect, not being drawn until they have come into view. so the biggest advantage these drivers would bring actually doesn't exsist:) The only thing that will do you is like the register says is when the player has come into view, and he ducks, or runs back round the corner. This would be a massive advantage in tfc, and i spose cs in a small way, but utterly useless in quake thank god:)

Er.

The fact that to see through walls means rendering it, you can of course see anything thats rendered, hence, you can see player models because they are technically in rendering view.

The other problem with Asus and their magnificent idea is that peeps with Asus cards who do not intend to cheat could get kicked even though they haven't done anything.

In case you didn't see the other thread... here are some useful links to enlighten you about this topic.

http://www.petitiononline.com/badasus/petition.html

http://www.theregister.co.uk/content/50/18870.html

http://www.rivastation.com/cgi-bin/show/show.pl?754

Basically, ASUS is screwing just about every online gaming community in order to try to get sales. They are screwing their market, but I guess if people don't sign petitions or raise a stink, they won't give a shit.

Bear in mind that they did this once before and public outcry forced them to remove these "features" from later drivers. Looks like they tried to sneak them back in, now it's up to the online communities again.

Because the only result is to loose." [/B]

It's spelt lose. Big companies pay people to notice things like loose and lose.

Is that a direct quote from ASUS? Because if it is then there's a fair chance it's just a lame publicity stunt or some llama work experience twat is pulling ppl's wood.

That was on an official ASUS statement when they first tried to release the cheat drivers a while ago. And yup, they spelt it wrong :)

This pisses me off no end. I've signed the petition and I actually did my latest column update about this last week.

BTW the thing about the rendering isn't as good news as it sounds, as it sometimes renders people quite some distance away. In fact there's a bit in cs_militia that gives you an effect similar to that of these cheat ASUS drivers (I assume, given I haven't seen them working). If you hover over the angle of the roof of the main house when dead, and just move slowly up, you eventually seem to hit a brush that removes the entire map, but leaves quite a few models visible (like ladders and people etc). They seem to pop in and out of view, so I assume this is the server deciding when to render things or not, but some of them are quite far away, definitely enough to give people a massive advantage.

I also assume that you can see people the other side of a wall next to you. The server is sending footstep information after all (and listening for footsteps is a vital key to doing well at CS), so surely your client must know there's something there... Wouldn't it render the model if something made the wall transparent?

afaik you quite often get to see the enemy if there's just a wall between you, especially if you jiggle araound a bit so there's not gonna be any surprises waiting for you and if you're playing CS then a rifled person can murder them thru the wall dead easy. It's not gonna be a perfect cheat but it could come in damn handy for lamers everywhere :(

for the lazy here is what i said.

SAw this on the ASUS site, everyone go have alook cause it has a poll on the bottom.

http://www.asus.com.tw/products/seethrough_1.asp

But I have to share this quote with you from there

quote:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Not only will novice players acquire a faster learning curve when playing 3D games with this secret weapon, the professional gamers will also have a chance to test their skills with a new challenge in online gaming tournaments."The constructive criticism ASUS has received so far has been greatly appreciated. Some concerns voiced by the gaming community are that there may be amateur gamers that may take advantage of this feature to get higher standings in gaming tournaments since the features may not restricted to a person's machine or to one player games. ASUS hopes that this can be an opportunity to work together with game developers to utilize the technology created and enable this technology to be beneficial to the overall gaming community.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Right let me get this staright, they want to make newbies in to killing machines. So a newbie would play an online 3d shooter and then suddenly stop using the drivers when he gets loads of kills? No not goign to happen without them he would be a newbie again.

Oh and the best line

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

excuse me? Test their skills? How would being able to see people behind walls in CPL q3 or Cs tournaments test a pro gamers skills. Here ASUS advocate cheating in professional gaming tournaments as long as the culprit uses their card, oh I cant wait for the CPL to bann ASUS products from its gaming event machines. But its worse, for you see although its okay for pro gamers to "test" themselves by cheating, were you an amature gamer its different

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

well DUH asus, this is what u have just condoned pro gamers doing, in oh let me see yes -gaming tournaments.

Bunch of fucking dicks.

*UPDATE* ASUS are screening the voting and comments made, so dont be suprised if no negative comments get posted on their site, and they then use a few comments as justification for continuing.

Bot Protection ???

From what i've read, I guess there is no way to detect whether the drivers being used allow these (ahem) 'features' (unless a client application approach is used like the one PunkBuster setup for half life!)

But , Is there any way that some sort of protection could be be set to detect which hardware the client is using ? (like a Bot protection DLL)- I know if this was enabled it would stop access to ASUS users who aren't intending to use the cheats ! - BUT if development began, and ASUS became aware thet its users face the prospect of being banned from public server simply for using their hardware, I'd wager they'll remove their 'inovations' from future driver releases !

(For those with ASUS cards - perhaps ASUS could run their own server pool - that ONLY ASUS users can access ! - keep all their newly generated lamers in one place !!)

Until that time - Let the boycot commence !

Yeh, if ASUS wants cheating games then they can create their own cheat-friendly servers. Great fun those will be :)

I cant see any reason why game/ mod developers cant release patches to inform the game server of hardware driver versions? Just send during the connection process 'This user is using "ASUS Cheat-o-matic lamershite drivers version 1.3"' then the server side can say whether to filter them out?

That'll work, but whether the developers will be intrested :/ Certainly mod developers might be able to implement this, even if the official patches wont.

ASUS Driver Retraction

Dear sir,
Thanks for your kindly reminding! To respect the preferences of the majority of our customers and users around the world, ASUS will disable “see-through” capability in all future graphics drivers. Although ASUS did not officially release the “see-through” feature in the current 11.01, 12.00 and 12.10 drivers, this feature-enhancing codes were enabled by non-ASUS programmers and posted on various unauthorized websites.

ASUS recognizes that these features may offer unfair competitive advantages for some users and will take actions to curtail the use of these drivers. All codes related to these features will be removed in all future versions (Version 12.40 and up) to prevent any further tampering that may enable “see-through”. ASUS will also provide a way for web hosts to detect and disable “see-through” functionality.

How to Detect and Disable “See-through” Mode
This method of detection is intended for web hosts of online games.
Web hosts should enumerate all keys (0000, 0001, etc.) under "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESystemCurrentControlSetServicesClassDisplay" and do the following patches.
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESystemCurrentControlSetServicesClassDisplayXXXXUI]
"DisableD3dWireframe"=dword:00000001
"DisableOglWireframe"=dword:00000001
"DisableOglTransparent"=dword:00000001
We respect the opinions of all our customers and thank you for bringing this issue to our attention.

Best Regards,

Kent Chien
