Assault on precinct 13

Just got the DVD on special offer. I was told it was a classic and the directors commentary on dog soldiers mentioned that parts of the film were inspired by assault on precinct 13 so I watched it. I got very bored waiting for the action to start and when it did I thought oh good here we g....... what? thats it? Is it me or does the actual siege last about 5 minutes. The films over before anything good happens so whats the big deal? I mean I wanted to like it I really wanted to be a fan but Im sorry lets face it, its crap.
Can anyone tell me why its so popular?

The Deer Hunter is a beautiful film, its just not about fighting in Vietnam which is what most people presume. DeNiro's finest performance (well, besides Awakenings) IMHO.

Didnt CVarpenter do the music to Sentinal? I think all his music sounds the same when you get down to it, still spooky though.
