Virgin Media is looking for people willing to test the 50Mbps downstream service in Ashford, Folkestone and Dover.

The trial service is priced at £47 per month - £10 more than Virgin Media's current 20Mbps top tier service - and comes with a 1.5Mbps upstream.

The trial will last until December 31 and participants will be provided with a new cable modem.

There are no D/L limits on NTL(virgin, whatt ever)

Virgin currently enforce bandwidth throttling, download more than 3gig between 4pm and 12:00 midnight and you are reduced to 1/2 speed for 24hrs under fair use policy.

I'm curious about the limit before STM kicks in for the 50mbit service. 3GB for 20mbit down to 5mbit is rather pathetic.

I think with sites such as BBC and ITV offering downloadable tv shows the UK isp's are going to have to rethink their policies. Also xbox 360 demos at around 1gig each take a 1/3 of the chunk out of your limit right away (as will the orange box) and soon to be launched downloadable movies via xbl.

I think they just assume everybody is downloading 10000 mp3s every day. The 4-12 limit is just affecting the working class, most pirates probably download during the day and night anyways.

One of the great things about UKOnline 22mbit service is that it's unlimited with a FUP of 500gb/month.

I was with NTL for 5 years, rarely a problem, though when there was it was a gauntlet of "press 5" "press 3" "cut off" being put on hold for an hour only to be disconnected or braindead Indian call centre workers taking 10 minutes to say my name properly. Then there was engineers simply not turning up, or when they did bother to turn up they wouldn't have what they needed to fix my fault. I think though that those problems are pretty much across the board for any service these days...

UKO are even worse than NTL.

Having been on both and had significant problems with both I have to disagree. With UKO I was eventually able to get through to a 2nd line tech support agent who REALLY knew his shit and decided to take control of my case. Once he did, the problem got resolved quite quickly. With NTL it was nothing but dumbass script reading tech agents who were totally clueless.

Yup, that's pretty lame but I've no doubt every other ISP has clients who've had similarly crap problems. Anyone actually trying to find out what a good ISP to go with nowadays will end up finding horror stories from everywhere. Ultimately it comes down to who's available and who provides the best options on paper.
