Army maneuvers

Can we try to look like an organised army rather than an "armed mob" please? Would make things special :)

Some suggestions. When you decide to make a stand or confront the enemy, tanks should line up at the front or in blocks. Archers should line up behind tanks. Casters should be at the back.

Go and download a copy of Braveheart using eDonkey2000 (www.edonkey2000.com) and have a look.

If models were solid it would be useful. But now it's rather good to stand in a collective mess of blades, bows and staffs since the enemy will have more difficulty picking out targets.

You are so right there, Stroke. Until (if) characters are made solid theres no point :/

Feasibility of making all living beings solid.....anyone got any experience in collision detection in a 3D environment that could make a comment on its programming difficulty in a game such as DAoC?

I think its not just a difficult thing to code but it also raises other issues. People would be able to block peoples exits in dungeons, narrow spaces, if it be on purpose or not, i'm sure their would be more than a few harsh words spoken.

Observations from alliance ganking excursion to Yggdra:

Best bet is to concentrate your attacks. Attack as one rather than confronting the enemy in small nukeable groups.

A loosely spaced line formation works well due it being more mez resistant. So stick together but in a loose formation.

Tanks charge past thier melee line, kill Nukers/Healers first.

Dont just run off and try to get people to follow you, tell people where you are going.

All move at the same speed, no speed buffs better than various levels of speed.

Listen to your leader.

As is often the case, when comfronted by groups of higher level opposition a lower level army can only survive if they all stay within sight of each other. It doesnt take long for them to wear down the army by picking of stragglers.

Dead stragglers > Spamming of messages > Confusion > Splitting of group > rez sickness > more dead stragglers > Massacre

Interesting points all. How about body collisions being only implemented against the enemy and not against same realm players?

This way the enemy tanks will have to kill the allied tanks first if the allied tanks are surrounding the casters. This would also mean that one could not block entrances to dungeons etc then.

Notice that when we were defending Bledmeer Faste the attacking midgards were all spread out when I arrived with the reinforcement army. This way there were more of them to get through thus they could AOE kill us more effectively. This and the fact they were all high levellers won the day for the mids. What can be used to counter that situation?

Yeah we should spread out more too :)

I always find it funny when there is about 20 Albs all clustered together and then those great flaming spears come from the sky and half of them park it.

Casters, archers and healers should always segragate themsleves from the main bulk of the tanks. They are weaker and it only takes one or two decent AOE spells to wipe them out, sit out of the way on your own and take pot shots. Casters just use your own AOE's on the main duelling hoard of tanks, clerics heal and rez the fallen as fast as possible, and AOE smite the beggars.

I don't think it's that easy to just "implement" collision. Since it is the way it is, Mythic has probably designed it that way. To avoid the issues mentioned in the earlier post.

One Point guys...

please please please dont use Braveheart as a basis for historical representation of warfare. I wont bother being all geeky and pointing out the inaccuracies but if you look at ingame fights they are pretty accurate as regards melee - normally tanks charge in - get mixed up and then all chaos breaks out.

TBH the game isnt far off as it is currently played. Healers and mages stay back whilst the tanks charge in and muller each other. If the opposition tanks break through to the casters its sushi time

:D

Wouldnt it be cool if you could record demos in DAOC? like you can with quake - that would seriously rock.

I've only seen Braveheart once, and can't remember exactly how warfare looked there, but i believe that the British used this tactic during the dark ages:
During the advance, fire longbows high in the air and let arrows fall down on the massed enemy force. Then launch the cavalry into them, then the melee forces to sweep up the rest.
Now, this is not a tactic warfare game, and is not designed to be one, so those tactics are not useful.
Still, a lot of tactics and strategy from real warfare can be used in this game, if not in the actual battle, atleast around it in the means of psychological warfare, transportation(WOOD!), intelligence etc etc. Let's not discuss the details in a multirealm thread ;)

I know there are programs that will grab your screen to a .avi file or whatever, but since this is a 3D game, you should be able to record coordinates and moves with code dumped to a logfile, not directly graphics dump.. THen you can recreate any battle-scene when offline using your DAoC graphic files locally. This is how .DEM files in CS/Quake are created... It would've been very cool if DAoC had this feature, as it would bring out a lot more DAoC video footage.. (and much better quality)

With volley we might get the rain of arrows - not flaming yet though :D

I would much rather like that kind of archer role than hiding behind some tree for 20 mins.

You could do the Archer role... especially when Volley comes out.

I think Mythic are trying to move us in that direction.

You can only use Volley once every 15 mins, bit naff really. Only time I can see its useful is somewhere like a keep raid, when the enemy suddenly come bursting through the doors of a defended keep and 5 archers all fire their Volleys off at the same time.

getting rather off topic, but has anything been said on volley i.e. will it be all archers classes (I have a Hib ranger) and will it require bow skill of 50 ?

I think the key is listening and learning/learning and sharing.

Was in Yggd a few moons ago. Actually saw some Mids around my level for a fair scrap!

Lo and behold, after getting a victory - we were killed by a purople who found us WITHIN 5 minutes.

That shows a good basic organisation exists - cant we have the same?
