Arming the Police

Edited little extra bit : Wazz, that sucks, but do you think having guns would make much of a difference to his attitude?

This is a very young policeman. I've heard a lot about him and how he likes to use his 'powers' in generally being an utter cunt. A fair few people I know have encountered him and made the same complaints. Give the man a gun when he has the attitude of almighty power already beforehand? Can you not see that as dangerous?

Ah more ill educated ramblings. Jolly good.

Considering cars contribute a stupidly small amount of the pollution in the air compared to factories and power stations, perhaps you should stop being so easily brainwashed by the anti-car league? I would get a train or bus, but seeing as the public transport system in this country is easily beaten by most third world countries, I'll stick to taking my car thanks. I paid for the priviledge, and I intend to use it.

But hey, lets blame drive by shootings on the motorist aswell shall we? Lets ban cars and let the gun culture run amok in our cities. That will make this country a better place to live!

I know Wazz, I'm against the police being routinely armed myself, I just wanted someone else to drag up a few points.

One of my friends was recently stopped and searched 20 minutes after stopping and parking in London, after driving all the way from Edinburgh. There really wasn't any call for it...well, apart for the half ounce he had, but sinc he hadn't touched it, that was a really lucky guess from the officer.

And Bodhi, Kam only made a joke about the police stopping motorists, and you seem to have seized upon it like a very cute little terrier. Public transport isn't as bad as it is made out to be, in fact, I seem to manage just fine without a car.

You have to admit that a car is an important part of a drive-by shooting.

Someone really needs to be introduced to South West Trains.

Erm the police have been routinely armed for years now. The armed response units were brought in in the 70's in Manchester.
If you mean all police being armed then the thing that worries me is the number of people accidentally killed by these units already.
Whether the police are armed or not wouldnt have saved the 2 Birmingham girls or anyone else for that matter. What we need is far tougher sentences for possessing an illegal fire arm.

I expect my feelings have changed regarding the Police as years have gone by. Wazz, you say the police searched you, and this is outrageous, but if you havent done any thing wrong whats the problem ? At the end of the day it's their job to see what people are doing ? Or perhaps they should be telepathic ?
I used to hate the police. I mean really. I used to get pulled up all the time , simply because a rode a loud motorbike, had long hair, beard all that shit. But why did they stop me ? Because I looked the sort who might be doing something wrong. Not fair ? Well maybe, but at the end of the day I more than likely was doing something wrong, so wheres the problem ? Where did my criminal record come from ? Almost exclusively from going about looking like the sort of twat who was breaking the law, then getting stopped/ nicked for it.
I dont think that every policeman should be armed, but there should certainly be more on the streets, and there should certainly be harsher penalties for street crime and robbery etc. Prisons are already full you say ? Build some more.

The older you get the righter you get (in both senses of the word :p

Arm the police I say. I bought a gun like that (snaps fingers) and if someone comes into my house at night illegally they are gonna get a faceful, simple as that. But if I go out and try to use it then I deserve to get "put down" as they say in the movies.

The problem isn't guns themselves, it's the fact that the criminals have them. Give the police more guns, I say, to even things up and while your at it give us "normal" people the right to shoot burglars.

Hehehe - I use SWT twice a day. Pretty poor service.

Overall I think public transport isn't bad, esp. around London. The tube is, of course, the daddy - its bloody brilliant. Piss cheap and extremely reliable.

(This is from someone who spends 4 1/2 hours on trains/tube a day)

I can't really comment, since I live in one of the most remote parts of Scotland where there is almost no crime what so ever.

The extent of crime here is someones window getting smashed by the guy next door when he's blootered.

Which only happens very rarely :)

heh

issues in descending order of importance....

public transport is a fucking JOKE. my "local" train station is the other side of 2 and a half miles into town. if i want to catch a train i'd first have to catch a taxi or TWO buses.... other than that trains are pretty fine down here, they run on time, are clean... are usually packed, but that's more down to me always using them at peak time... what cha gonna do?

but buses are beyond. i mean fs swansea is the big city near here, i work on one side of it, it's where i do my shopping etc... it's 12 miles away as the crow flies, 15 by wiggly roads.... 15-20 min car journey when the roads are empty, 30-45 mins when it's rush hour.... to get to my work by bus though would take three buses, and over two and a half hours to complete the journey in one direction... i couldn't even make it home at night because i finish work at 8.30pm, and there's no buses on 2 of the 3 journeys i need to make that late at "night"....

leave my car at home? FUCK THAT.

give the police guns? what an utterly fucking ridiculous idea... they're already on the biggest power trip ever seen...

we've already seen in the last months of last year how the police armed response units fuck things up, killing unarmed civilians, and unarmed criminals for that matter....

i think if a cop kills someone who posed no threat they SHOULD go down for life and i mean like forever...

people want guns because they're "cool"... they're an accessory... they're contraband....they give "respect" (tho anyone who pays £1000 for a glock 17 is clearly a fucking idiot.... Strayer-Voigt Infinity all the way baybee)

giving all the police guns will not reduce gun crime in this country one single bit. it will result in vastly increased civilian casualties, it will result in more police guns being lost. enough said.

If the Americans are anything to go by, giving the police guns would just make the general populace want guns too. So i'd rather they didn't have guns, but they still have the bullet proof vests. Obviously.

Living in Edinburgh I have a pretty biased view of buses. We have two different bus companies, LRT (former council buses) and First, who both run very regular buses, LRT covering more routes inside Edinburgh, and First covering all the connections to towns in the Lothians.

That said, people in some areas have no choice, and for that reason I'd never want to see cars banned, and taxes kept sensible. I just wish people who didn't need to use them didn't. I hate seeing the queuing traffic at rush hour, so many people, one per car, and most of them could have got the same bus as me.

I agree with the first point. Things just now are comparatively good, only very highly trained officers have guns (yes, I know wolfeeh), rather than all of them. Imagine Reg from The Bill with a sidearm.;)
As for your second point, for once I don't agree. If I had that weight hanging over my head as I was doing that sort of job, and already knew the guilt I'd have to live with, I'd get a new job.

Hit the nail on the head. Fucked if I can come up with any suggestions on how to stop that though.

I was once on a hiking holiday with my gf of the time. we were in a rather rural part of holland where I discovered that nobody, and I mean nobody bothered to lock up their bikes, cars, homes etc. I was quite shocked, because where I live not locking your bike with a _very big lock means your bike will be gone before you're 10 yards away from it, not to mention what will happen to your car, house, whatever.

I think they should arm the police.

I think shooting some armed criminals would send shock waves out throughout the nation.

Most people wouldn't like it.

I would.

I'm sure most people would think twice about walking round with a gun to commit crime if they knew the police would shoot them if they were caught.

A very blunt way of putting it but what else would you expect from me.

I couldnt give a damn if criminals who repeatly offend get their head blown off because I for one do not want to pay for them to go to jail and have all expenses paid trips to hot countrys to make them "a better person" at my expense.

Arm the police, let them use the weapons, hang anyone else caught that doesnt get blown away by the police.

The ultra liberal view taken by many in this country is getting beyond belief. The victims are often vitimised by lawyers and the criminals are made out to be the hard done by individual who for some reason should be "protected". Like the utter asshole bastard who is claiming compensation for "lost earnings" or something as rediculous in the farmer shooting case. I think the farmer would have done all of us a favour to take out that cunt while he was at it.

I believe safegaurds should be put in place so that lawyers cannot milk the system to make fuck loads of money at the tax payers expense whilst making ridicule of the law system.
I also believe murderers and other such horrible people should be hung/shot/raped/stabbed and basically killed for what they have done.

Dime

*digs up his old thread*

I just read this article at BBC News. It made an interesting case for relaxing gun control, more informed than the average "give us guns so we can kill criminals" rant.

Heh, I was going to post the same link :) Was interesting, not sure how much I trust the judgement of any single person on this kind of thing though, I'd like to see a proper study being funded by someone not actually in government or the civil service.

Normally the only studies you see are, as you said, government sponsored, or backed by the lovely NRA, who we know are totally impartial.
