BT strike again, I ordered an extra line to be installed this morning and again the engineer didnt turn up. My appointment changed to the 2nd of August but did they tell me this? NO! :twak:

This is the second time its happened and the second time ive wasted a holiday day from work and not only that but I found out I cant get broadband by missing it by 1dB...

God im pissed...

apply again, woosh test dB readings can fluctuate. Take any phone equipment off the line before the test too, it may just be enough to push it under.

Some engineers actually came to my home and did a test straight from my socket so I doubt itll help, hence why I was trying a new line (may shave off the dB I need) :(

even just an identical test with different weather, all sorts can effect it. 1dB should be relatively easy to get back on another test.

Extended reach and new limits which we should see very soon may sort you out too.

Why should they care? 1db just means you won't get max speed with your broadband connection....

It doesn't make any difference to the speed in real terms, I've seen them run at 5dB over the limit quite happily. I think it boils down more to stability. I colleague of mine (who was the one who had the 5dB thing) asked the engineer why he couldn't have it, the engineer had actually tried it before doing the woosh test, had it working, did the test which came back too high and had to remove it. They have no choice sadly :/

That's right. BT's view is that they'll provide a guaranteed service within their agreed parameters, or not at all.

its all to do with quality of service.

and a single db in a line test is quite a large jump, especially when your up in the 50's range (i cant remember the exact number, but its something like x5 the noise level of before)

also by going above the 55db "limit" imposed on an extended reach line (over 4km) the exchange cannot sync the line as well as it could under normal limits, it has to push more power down the line to keep the line steady, but if they do this down the current copper line bundles, theres more chance of signal leakage and interference to other lines on the bundles.

you probably saw the line run at 5db over for a few minutes, try and run the same line on a 24/7 timescale and you will see it is very unsteady.

BT quote this "imaginary" quality of service in supplying you the ADSL line, they arnt going to supply you a line that constantly breaks since they will get extra work from it, thats why if your even .5db over the limit you dont get it.. because it calculates out as more work for them to deal with when its unneccesary.
its like you buying a new car that'll break down at random with no warning, would you willingly buy it?

Looks like ill have to wait for those 10km trials to end and for BT to extend the pass rate (stands at 59db atm I think)

oh well :(

Decibels is a unit for comparison, in this case the measurement is most likely used for signal/noise ratios.

BT are shit, they gave me 4 activation dates for adsl over a 1month period. Didn't get adsl from BT at all. This was while we were still paying them too as it was supposed to be switched over from the old house :(

Lies, all lies!

They said in that advert that when they make an appointment, they'll do their best to keep it! That means something, it doesn't mean nothing, oh no - it means something that's not nothing, but something else!

It took BT a week to get my broadband working. Shouldn't really take that long to tell me to unplug the sky box from the phoneline.

I think its worse to have it then lose it (I had adsl for 2 years in my old house). Going back to 56k modems is torture but its probably my own fault for getting a house in a village.

Its just annoying that the engineer said "you see that tree in your garden? if your house was there you could have it"

Then why not connect the modem at the point where the tree is?

Its not outdoors if you build a 3 course brick shelter for it and a flat roof :)

If anyone's interested, BT have just started a big 'customer focus' push internally whereby its a big deal to keep an appointment made with a customer, whoever the customer may be.

Things should improve over the next few weeks/months.

No, it will make a difference. It really will! I work for a company in the BT Group and this campaign thing is making waves.

The BT CEO got back to me within 10 minutes of me emailing him. If there are changes shaking down through the company I'd be inclined to wait and see the result :)

You sure it was the CEO who actually responded and not his PA dealing with all his correspondance?

In my experience people that high up are never in the office long enough to check their emails. :puke:
