Are you in 'The Zone'?

Studies like this have been run over and over and over, and they prove that gaming improves people's reaction speed, reflexes, concentration, etc. I don't see what the big deal is - it's pretty obvious that if you repeatedly perform an action that requires coordination and thought, it's going to do those things. It certainly doesn't make playing on your computer any more valid as a "sport" or any of that other shit they claim this evidence suggests.

ps: Virtua Fighter is for puffs

"Flow State is an optimal psychological experience. It's when you're functioning on auto-pilot, when everything clicks into place and goes right"

But we're talking about silly computer games!!! :D

I sometimes sit and watch stu's avatar for hours on end. I'm not sure why. :(

I've not read the link(I might when i browse my way to the bbc news), however i would agree that there's deffinately a gaming 'Zone'.

I'm probebrly not in it enough to give an explanation of it :(

I'm not bothering reading any of these it does and it doesn't cause this or that arguements, since I find most of them pointless and too flawed in there thinking to be worth the eye movement.

Sorry master Callous I was in a rush...that a little better 4u :p

And you also write extremely long sentences with absolutely no punctuation at all which makes them that little bit harder to read.

And... what Stu said.

Strangely "In The Zone" is the name of the Microsoft Gaming Newsletter, and my Bill-o-meter is rattling at "high conspiracy" now :)

remember seeing something the otehr day about how games dont stimulate the front part of the brain or somewhere thus showing that they dont enlargen your learning experience

I definately think there is a gaming zone. When I'm playing on form, nicely relaxed, I start to tune out, I seem to think about playing less, yet my shooting becomes perfectly accurate (certainly compared to before ;)). I used to get the same feeling when I was fencing, sometimes you just switch off and let your subconcious take over.

I agree Will. There are times when one is just a little bit faster, a little more accurate etc. Strangely, I find that when this happens people seem to jump right into your sights...although if this is due to you being in the most optimum position for a shot at the time or due to being in 'the zone' I can't say ;)

It varies from game to game how easy it is to get into "the zone". Proper twitch shooters, deathmatch games, make it much easier to get into, CS I find it prettu hard because it relies on a bit more thinking once the teams are a little smaller (all that walking, crawling, and listening), but sometimes I still hit that sweet spot.

I think my best example of the meditative state they were talking about was one day, practicing my sabre fencing, sparring with a friend. It's a close match, and I "wake up" to find the tip of my sword on his neck guard - a very naughty move, not really supposed to do it in practices. It's weird how I let my mind switch off, and that's why people say playing games relaxes them I guess.

as itchy said :D

i wont bother with more mindless drivel trying to put a point across, its fun zoning for a full on 30 min CTF game tho... :)

You only get increased alpha wave activity while playing the game....it is not sustained once you stop playing.

I need some while playing CS....It might stop me getting my ass kicked... but i dont think it compansates for being shite :D

aye. i've had that experience in CS as well as TFC. you just slip into it. knowing your shots will be perfect. as an AWP/M whore I find it easier to slip into them and it just turns into one big harvest.

case in point. 110 kills on dod_omaha as an allied sniper and god knows how many i racked up onthe jolt! HPB server which ended up with me getting called a hacker :/

I've also noticed that if i get myself really riled up and angry. i find my performance increases. e.g. get an mp5, really angry. can start racking up the kills.

perhaps its how the brain is reacting. signals are being sent faster around the mush by my mood.

my two cents

I know what you mean Munkey. I can play CS pretty good, but there are times I can't explain now well I'm doing. 3 scout headshots as fast as I can fire from the far tower on assault. I know I'm not that good, but I've done it, when in this zone.

If only I could do it on purpose.
