Are all Q2 people like nopcode?

Alrighty, you lot - what's the deal? Do you all hate Q3 and therefore ID for "killing" your game?

Are you SO VERY angry that you want to ruin Q3 for those that play it, or perhaps you took the time to stop and think?

When you did pause for thought, did you think that the Q2 scene would be better served by channeling any creative talent towards creating better mods, or admin mods, and generally stamping out cheating?

If so, well done for actually having a brain, rather than frothing at the mouth and chanting "smash the system!".

In a word .. no.

When Q3a first came out, a lot of people were disappointed .. but they basically fell into two groups:

1) "Q3a is rubbish, I'm going to keep playing Q2"
2) "Q3a is rubbish, but it's the future so I'm going to play it and hope it grows on me"

Apparently there's a 3rd group which contains nopcode, but basically it's a pretty insignificant minority.

I can fully understand nopcode's "reasons" .. but can't justify his actions .. people like him have ruined the Q2 scene (that's what's really killing Q2 off .. the bots/paks/and general distrust, not Q3) and claiming that he's producing something like this because of what "Q3a" has done to his beloved game is just .. well, words fail me .. but "misguided", "sad", "pathetic" and just plain "wrong" all spring to mind.

The Q2 scene has been under pressure from the cheats for a long time now .. and claiming that you just wanted to show people "that is could be done" isn't a moral defence.

It might not be the gun manufacturers who kill people, but if you distribute guns (or, if you prefer a more workable analogy, drugs) freely to anyone who wants one .. you have to bare responsibility when the sh*t hits the fan, imo.

Tbh, the Q2 scene is still alive (at least in the Uk) and is actually getting a little better since the l33tist element is mostly moving to Q3a .. but, hey, far be it from Nopcode to notice that in his vitriolic rage.

No. I'm a die hard Quake 2 fan. However, I do enjoy Rocket Arena 3 for Quake 3. I run what will be a division 1 standard successful clan. I'm in a very popular quake 2 clan (albeit crap, MOooOOooOOOoo!!!). I personally despise what Nopcode is doing / has done to both scenes. If I had nopcodes talent for coding, and could code an aimbot for either game, I would use said talent to prevent it happening. So what if you don't like the game? Everybody has their own taste in games. There are actually people out their that enjoy playing stuff like "Tomb Raider". Because I heavily dislike the game myself (although owning a legal copy), Doesn't mean I'm going to attempt to ruin a community by writing a cheat for it. (Yes, I'm aware there's no community, no net play etcetc, just metaphorically speaking.)
I will play Quake 2 as long as it possible to do so, because I enjoy it. I will do the same for Ra3.
Quake 2, as SimbobX said, has been under the pressure of cheats for almost as long as it has been around. Recently a modification to Ratbot was released, which gets past the current BWAdmin protection. Being a public q2 admin for BW I try my damned hardest to manually make sure people can get on a server and enjoy the game without having to worry about immoral people cheating, although as hard as it is to detect, there is no harm done in trying.
I always have had a very strong opinion on cheating, and I believe gaining any unfair advantage be it brighter skins, brighter grenades/weapons to spike paks timers and aimbots, is NOT how a game should be played. I still play the game as it is "out of the box" because of my moral beliefs. It will be interesting to see how ID or their community copes and deals with the likes of nopcode and his software.

I'd agree with SimB, in some ways Q2 scene has come full circle, but in other leagues/mods its getting worse.

Focusing on Q3 for a bit , but looking at other online games coming our way.

Still. I've also moved to Quake 3 only now, I can't compete these days against so many people in quake 2 who *may* be botting, *may* be using hacked paks etc, and even so, the community is still a little shite to say the least :|
The last thing i want tho, is to see either game die for any reason, too many people play both.

When I read Durzel's column tbh all I thought was "ffs - I may as well go buy Deus Ex and spend my life offline instead..."

There are ways and means to stop this type of cheat BUT even they themselves are open to attack, being located on the client computer and all...

The only way to "stop" or at least "minimize" the impact would be to have something on the client computer a'la Qizmo from Quakeworld that launched the game executable itself. Being open to hacking itself, the proxy would need updating on a (weekly?) basis with rearranged authentication code and checking code so that bot producers would have to work bloody quickly to make anything available...

But like I said - whilst the "decisive" software is on the client machine there is absolutely nothing that can be done.

Maybe "turn based" web games will be the thing of the future - but even then you need to have them written by someone reliable and hosted somewhere trustworthy ... (/me nips off and writes one, not forgetting to add the "QorbeQ wins" code...)........

Yeah, there's the issue of spotting the cheating methods employed and if neccesary banning the cheaters so they might actually learn something from it.

Certainly in some leagues and pub servers ppl are already suspicious of a "good" shot or two. I've been called a bot a total of 2 times, both times I had lucky runs of 6 or so straight quick kills with railgun. Never thought I'd see the day where I get called a bot.

But if that link was easy to find then as you know, shit spread fast. If one person where to spam that ....

prices charged for games .
Then theres the bloody cost of upgrading your PC.
