They were going on about it on Terry and Gaby on Friday. The specialist they had on the show was a real harbinger of doom.

Makes you realise how precarious life on this planet is. If its not huge landslides in the atlantic threatening to wipe out the eastern coast of the US, or rogue asteroids angrily buzzing by, its supervolcanos!

The end of the article is closer to the truth. We have no idea when it is going to go off. It could be tomorrow, it could be in 10,000 years. The threat is similar to a meteor striking the Earth, or the side falling off Hawai (think tidal wave washing all the way over America).

Bloody Americans. If isn't their monkey of a President, it's their supervolcanoes.

I have noticed a theme with all these over hyped Doom stories.

It ALWAYS has the biggest effect on americans. It's a sign.

According to the article, it would cause mass starvation, but when the last one exploded a handful of humans survived.

Time to stock up on the baked beans then everyone :)

Well due to the "Nuclear Winter" style climate change due to a super volcano then a little global warming will be welcome :)

I did a talk on this to all of my school, its quite scary :(
For more info search google for super volcanoes :)

/edit 3 facts i can remember, an area around there the size of wales would be covered in 5+meters of ash and life would cease to exist there (incenerated)
The rest of the USA, most of canada and mexico would be covered in upwards of 2 meters of ash.
The explosion would blast out over 10km CUBED of lava, gasses and stones etc.

I'm fairly sure the program about the east coast of the US being hit by a massive 1,000+ ft Tsunami was regarding the Cumbre Vieja volcano located off the west coast of Africa on the Canary Islands' La Palma island. After the last eruption a massive crack appeared from one side to the other which raised fears that during some future eruption one whole side of the Island would slide into the sea and cause the Tsunami.

The frightening thing is, its happened before, and they have proof.

And a large proportion of the USA being destroyed is a bad thing?

Well the US economy would run in to massive problems, most probably collapse, in such a disaster which would ripple its way round the world causing huge problems for other countries economies. Plus Europe, Africa, would most probably get hit by Tsunami's on a smaller scale but still something up to 150ft in height.

Indeed. And remember, if there really was a stonking great astoroid heading for earth, no one would have told us due to the panic. the affect of everyone realising there was nothing long term to live for would greatly limit their ability to make money for the next life.

And yeah, if the world is going to end, it will. Stop worrying, just live your life the way you want.

But obviously, don't waste your life on the assumtion that the world *will* end and that squandering all your retirement savings wont hurt...

I read something a while ago saying that we have nothing to worry about from big asteroids. We should be able to detect anything large enough to do any damage about 10 years before it hit. More than enough time to do something.
Except if it happens like in the film 'Meteor', then we are all fucked.

Well for the Londoners among you wishing our US cousins all the best (;)) here is a website giving background on a book I just finished reading:
*** warning !! crappy audio in this link!!!***

http://www.floodlondon.com/index.htm

Think the Thames barrier is infallible? Think again!

That link is dead annoying as it auto forwards you to a dodgy "news bulletin" sound file with some wooden news reader talking about floods.

Hmmm... doesn't on my pc here, and I don't have my home config with ad blocking either. I don't think it's forwarding but rather playing some audio at you, it says at the top of the page:

"You are listening to the text of a radio announcement from the Metropolitan Police Contingency Plans, 1979." and then gives a link to the full announcement.

Feel free to nerf the link if you think necessary, of course... :)

Edit: reloaded the link and it played... putting a warning on the linkaaaage :)
