Exactly the same thing happened to me.
My line could only support 1MB speed but they put it up to 8. My line couldn't handle it.
BT support is crap. Took me 7 months to get it back down to 1MB. I'd call technical support, they'd say I had to go through Sales. I called Sales, they transferred me to technical. Yadda yadda yadda.
When I had it put back to 1MB they did a general upgrade in the area (3 weeks later!) to 8MB again. I started off on the same old routine and thought sod it I'm moving.
So I phoned their cancellation department to get my MAC code. They asked why I am cancelling and I told them. A Manager called back & sorted it in 24 hours.
So in short, tell them to downgrade you to whatever you were on. Be prepared to be angry for a while then phone up to cancel. Something might happen then.
I sympathise with you bud, I wouldn't like to go through it again.

There is a 10 day period after upgrade where they measure you max stable sync rate..then set it at the most stable rate after that time.
As for getting upgraded to 8mb 7 months ago? unless you were "selected" for the trial that didn't happen.
