anyone seen "proper" tests of this thing yet?

It seems all I do is post links from the FiringSquad ;) Anyway, they have reviewed the 3200+ and were impressed with it (90%). No doubt there will be many other reviews going live today. It seems cool, but I have a feeling the 3.2Ghz P4, especially with it's 800Mhz FSB, should nudge Intel back in front when it's released. Whatever the case, I dare so both chips are exorbitantly priced :D

well, that P4 is at least $200 over the AMD, not to mention the ram that will have to go with it. that translates as €200....and I can buy a lot of beer for 200 euros...

That XP is waaaaay too expensive. Is anyone unhappy with what is already in their box? My XP2000+ still chugs through everything I need. So does the XP1700+ in my server. I don't need to fastest and greatest any more, so I'll be giving it a miss.

Man, I still *hate* the new amd naming convention. It's such a challenge to find out the actual Mhz. I don't care that it equates to that much on a Pentium. Surely the performance of the chips is gunna vary between releases, and hence the best thing to go by is actual Mhz. The whole point is to get people to think that they're buying a 3200mhz chip, because it works out as fast as the Intel chip of 3200mhz. In my opinion, better chip or otherwise, that's false advertising and it angers me lots.

The naming convention saga is quite interesting, but it all boils down to the fact that Mhz isn't an effective way of measuring performance. Some time ago now Intel proposed a new system, that would take into account a variety of factors and produce a figure that would allow genuine comparisons to be made (a bit like 3DMark). Unfortunately AMD agreed in theory, but dismissed the proposals. Now AMD wishes to change the naming conventions but are having a hard time. In short, it's a mess.

Personally, for what it's worth, I appreciate AMD's steps to suffix their products with a number comparable to Intel's lineup. It's not about confusing people, it's about allowing them to make easy comparisons. Let's face it, most of us would not immediately think that a 2.17GHz AMD CPU could perform around the same as a 3Ghz Intel CPU, and so the numbers suffixed on AMD chips have their uses.

Anyway, the whole situation is far from perfect, but both AMD and Intel happily acknowledge that something has to be done. Hopefully a new, industry-wide, naming convention will be introduced soon. Sadly, since Intel processors are superior at certain tasks, and AMD at others, it may be some time before it is agreed upon what exactly should be measured and taken into account.

Kind Regards

Often rendered by hackers as "Meaningless Indication of

The etymologically incorrect singular "1 MIP" is sometimes
