After a little bit of googling I still find people mentioning my old site planet101 ... so I decided to write a potted history for it for those interested.

In the interests of making sure it doesn't get lost I'm going to link to the original thread, article, and repost here so you don't have to do either, if you're too lazy to click, or planetarion implodes for some reason!

For all www.planet101.org shows is: "The avalanche has started. It is too late for the pebbles to cote. Planet 101. Comming Soon"

But anyway, why rely on external sites? Surely the winners deserve a place on www.planetarion.com

Planet 101 used to be a pa fan site many many moons ago. in fact many many thanks go to CrazyChicken, then Coffee, and finally braska (nee Ragnarok - though he uses this nick on many forums) who has moved on to do www.irc101.org and www.kazham.com which I host. All these guys did a wonderful job of the day to day running the site.

It all started when I approached the two people that had already started portals, of which CrazyChicken was one of them. Much to my chargrin I forget the name of the other portal and the name he went by at that time (I can't even find him on my archived icq list any more!) Things were great, the two guys had great fun building the site, though the guy I've forgotton soon lost interest, as his real life intervened and I think he lost his net conectivity for a while. Both portals were quite popular and quickly were hitting their bandwidth limits, so having just started in the hosting biz myself, I offered to host a combined site with no limits or adverts whatsoever.

The site soon became popular, and since I was sponsoring the site on my own servers, I felt that making money with adverts would be annoying for the end users, as at that time it was free to play planetarion, and had a not very obtrusive ad on the top of the screen. Eventually CrazyChicken became involved with other projects, and the day to day running went to a chap who called himself Coffee, who as a budding web designer (and the last I heard he was working full time as one - but that was before the .com bust)

Alas when Coffee was recruited to do the planetarion main site (again many moons ago) the site hits dropped off rapidly. Around this time, a good friend and collegue Chris Royles, who is an avid programmer, and Lightwave artist did some 3D models for the main site. His site is http://www.royles.net/ and his renders are at http://royles.doosh.net/gallery/Planetarion-Renders WARNING some of the pictures on his site might not be safe to view at your place of employment or school, being an artist there's the odd nuddie pic on there! The rendering url is safe if you keep to that portion of the site, though the rest of the gallery might not be - you have been warned!

So with the surge of people to the new pa portal, and to be honest coffee and I were quite pleased with the success of planetarion. But the truth was staring us in the face, the p101 site was going to die, if not that year maybe the next ...

It wasn't long after that before ragnarok/braska stepped in to take over, we tried very hard to get people looking at the site again, with a history section, and various battlecalcs. By this point I became dangerously ill with an infected gall bladder, and gallstones. Coupled with changing jobs (the hosting biz was more of a hobby than anything else) and I was happy for braska to have free reign over the site.

Around this time last year I drew the line under planet101, no new posts had been made for a while, and the search engines were the most popular visitors to the site!

www.planet101.org has a deliberatly obscure title screen, and will stay that way until the new plans for the site are finished. Yes it's going to be a game, no I don't think it'll be appropriate for me to mention anything else about it on here.

Finally, if anyone is interested in the data of the site, please visit me (oPless) or Ragnarok (aka Braska) on #tetracite on irc.quakenet.org, braska who is likely to have the old archive of the site is currently on vacation so might be rather quiet. So if any of the pa mods, or portal/fansite people are interested, give us a poke :)

I'm happy to see that planetarion is still alive and kicking after all this time!
