Anyone know what the rules are?

At my work, my office is the server-room. For some reason the air-con is a bit pants and got worse over the last month. So today the caretakers brought me in a thermometer to check how hot it is.

So far it's at 100 degree fahrenheit.

I'm still wearing a jumper to work though

So does anyone know the rules of how hot you're allowed it before you can complain? Legally speaking.

From what I recall, I don't think there is a maximum temperature you can reach before you can say anything.

However, if the server room is that hot, it might be worth pointing out the fact that the servers themselves might not live much longer before they collapse in a puddle of melted plastic...you're looking at about 38 degrees Celsius for that.

The TUC asked for a maximum working temperature of 30C, or 27C for those doing strenuous work to be introduced. It never was approved, at present there is no "maximum" temperature.

The 'powers that be' are aware of the temp and are trying their best to get a solution to it.

The problem is that my room is the centre of the building. So the air-con needs a fairly long pipe to the outside.

Don't you have a Health & Safety person in your company? They should know.

I work in a gov dept and (I think organised by our union) when the temp goes above or below agreed temp's, the management have to act...longer & more frequent breaks, early finishes (even closed the building in the past), fans on every desk in office etc....although I'm lucky, we've got air conditioning in my wee part of the office...ahhh, and what temp do I want to work in today?...fight then ensues with co-workers (hot house flowers that they are!!!)....

Our server room is its own room with air conditioning just for them. Sounds like twenty hoovers running at the same time

Aye Breni is right, there is no maximum level ........ however they still have a duty to maintain 'reasonable working conditions', so that they can't just let it go up and up and do nothing at all. Shitty really!

People power, if it is that bad petition the staff, unless of course you do belong to a trade union of some description, in which case the H&S rep needs a kick up the ass!
