Yeah... well thanks for your help (NOT!) 
I worked it out so if you want to be able to check your ping times or run pingplotter as you play and watch for issues read on....
If you want to find out the ip addy fo the server you are playing, get a command prompt up and type:
ping servername.planetside.com <ENTER>
i.e.
ping werner.planetside.com <ENTER>
for the Euro server.
and the ip address should be displayed.
The most common one needed here would be Werner, which is IP address 195.33.135.34.
