I remember reading a 100+ post thread on a newsgroup complaining about Watford Electronics
Unless they've since cleaned up their act I'd avoid em like the plague. They had a *terrible* reputation.
Anyone here had bad experiences with them ?

Yep, but that's probably a little unfair; one f**kwit doth not a bad company make. (OTOH, if they're all f**kwits, then that's a different matter entirely.)

A couple of years ago, I bought a Traxdata-repackaged Philips CDR2600 from them ('cos Traxdata did cheap bundles back then). Got to me virtually dead; I rang Watford who were no use whatsoever -- it was just the usual "does it work with 1x burns, and have you got the latest drivers?" which lead me to believe the bloke had no clue about CDRs at all -- so I rang Traxdata who at least knew what they were talking about. They advised me to send it back to Watford.

After much hassling Watford's tech support, they grudgingly gave me an RMA number and agreed to reimburse me for postage -- so I sent them the drive back. Ok, so Parcel Force didn't get them the drive on time and it did coincide with one of their stock-takes, but I didn't get the drive back for eight weeks. Even then, the drive was seriously broken, but I didn't know this and didn't want to have to wait another eight weeks so I put up with its little quirks until it eventually died (just after the warranty expired). And they never reimbursed me for postage.

But please don't take this as "don't buy from Watford". I'm probably only one customer out of tens of thousands, and just 'cos I got unlucky doesn't mean you will. I'm sure they must have improved their tech support and returns by now... they *must* have done...

Rup.

P.S. And they used to advertise in both Micro User and Acorn User, so they can't be all bad :)

I remember reading a page slagging them off on the web, when I was looking for a good, cheap scanner, I think.

So don't use them. Ultra cheap = shite + we don't care, in terms of computer gear and British service industries generally.

I am assuming that you wish to purchase a CDR/CDRW for archiving data purposes. However, 'certain' types of data can be a bit tricky to back up.

I cannot offer any real advice on which is the best one to buy, since any switched on person *knows* that 90% of the world's CDROM's, CDR's and CDRW's are made by the same few companies. Namely; Panasonic, Yamaha and Sony. You may 'Think' you are buying a HP SureStore CDWriter, and it may have HP stamped all over it, but at the heart of the matter is a good old Panasonic drive (I think - may be one of the others!)

So, it all comes down to the software you choose to use when 'archiving your data'. Many data discs use such trickery as false TOC's (telling you you have 800MB on a 650MB disc, which confuses the copying software), ISO or BIN protection, or both - deliberate errors, and so on.

Choose your software carefully! I recommend either:

Adaptec CD Creator (Professional ed.)
Nero Burning ROM 4.0
