Quick question, just to confirm, can you plug ordinary USB stuff into a USB 2.0 socket and it works normally (not at high speed or anything). I'm considering getting a USB card and I wondered if it is worth getting a USB 2.0 instead.

In other words, is USB 2.0 "downwards compatible ?

From Tectronix FAQ
3. How does the end user benefit from USB 2.0?

With the increased data bus speed, computer consumers will benefit from an additional range of high performance peripherals. Even with multiple high-speed peripherals connected to a USB 2.0 bus, they will not have to worry about hitting the bandwidth bottleneck. The new specification also inherits the current USB’s Plug and Play and hot-swapping capability as well as providing backward compatibility for USB 1.1 hardware.

Ta very much ITF, but I just need someone to confirm that I simply plug my existing USB stuff straight into the USB 2.0 sockets, no need for adapters etc.

Ok, got my USB 2.0 card installed now and works a treat, old USB scanner and camera go straight in. The onboard USB on my P3 mobo (Asus P3V4X) wasn't working with my camera and now its fine, and if anything slightly faster too :)

I'd recommend this Belkin USB 2.0 PCI card, 4 external and 1 internal USB 2.0 ports, nice piece of work, easy install, and its got red LEDs all over it, worth putting in a glass case !

The Belkin one I got was £49.34 incl VAT from Dabs, I've got some other Belkin stuff, including a KVM switch, and they aren't as shoddy as they used to be, so I'd say that's a good quality one.

Normal USB 4-port cards are around £35.
