Anybody Recommend 19"+ TFT for Gaming?

Hi

Can anybody recommend a high quality (price not a real issue) TFT LCD monitor that I can use for business and gaming.

I'm after a 19", would go larger if I had to to get the quality. Min res 1280x1024, must have a responce time of under 20.

Ideally I would like it for watching DVD's etc as well, so widescreen would be cool but not as important as the lack of ghosting.

I mainly play FPS games, I've tried searching dozens of review type sites, but nobody seems to comment about their ability to deal with gaming.

Anybody here have a high quality setup with a 19-22" LCD they can 100% recommend.

Ive got a Dell 2000FP (20") which is pretty damn good and highly recommended by anyone who owns it. Max res is 1600x1200 @ 60Hz and on DVI input its crisp. 25ms response time but still good for gaming.

What spec is your PC?

Hi

PC is P4 2.8
1024 MB RAM
Radeon 9700 Pro (although considering a 9800 Pro)

I have heard about the Dell, and the 1600x1200 sounds appealing, is that the native res?

This the fella..

My only issue is that everyone tells me that I should be avoiding 25ms type TFT's and only looking at sub 20ms, more like 16 preferably , and apparently in the next 2 months or so we will see 12ms .

Do you get any ghosting on your Dell? Do you play games like Quake, UT, etc, FPS's?

What about DVD playback ?

Cheers

1600 is the native res, yeah. your vid card support DVI out?

I play all sorts of games. Quake 2, 3. GTA, Tiger Woods. C&C.

You do get ghosting buts its hardly noticeable. mostly on quake 2 due to its pace. doesnt bother me though but it sounds like you want the best ms possible.

My PC is a 2800XP Barton, same Ram as you but ive got a 5900 Ultra. 9800 Pro will probably be better in some respects.

Its your call at the end of the day but i would recommend this screen. Maybe wait and see whats coming out which will drive prices down on current items but i spose you've got to jump in somewhere.

I'll do some more research, the Dell is pretty well priced here in the UK, and gaming is not my no1 priority, I play maybe 2-3 hours per week tops, but I do like my toys to be top notch, I don't think I could cope with even minimal ghosting, I think I'll wait until Jan for the 12 ms units.

I did hear recently that the so called 16ms units actually perform worse than the 20 ms units as they 16ms only applies to certain colours going all the way on and off, the 20ms applies to ALL colours.

I didn't read to deeply into it, only skimmed it, but suffice to say the whole ms thing currently may be a little misleading..

Not sure if the 9700supports DVI out, I'll do some research. I can easily go get a card which does if not.

Problem with TFT's is the native resolution thang.

Put them in anything other than their native res and they look shite IMHO.

I love my 21" flatscreen CRT at 120+Hz refresh. Solid, stable, crisp, easy on the eyes in ANY resolution....

I can say with about 90% certainty that unless you got an Utterly obscure shite make it will do DVI.

yAH, the native resolution problem...I have a hitachi 17 inch TFT. No probelms normally @ 1280x1024 (its actually really nice for playing games and looks lurvely)....problem is, at other resolutions, the conversion by the monitor is ugly (I am talking DV input here). This is fine for most games as they support 1280x1024 - BF1942 doen't ! In fact, I found BF unplayable at non native res's, so much so, I had to get my old crt out of the cupboard to play the latest mission pak (btw....in secret weapons...you get rocket pants :) ).

The other wee gripe is when scrolling in IE, with dark text & pale background, the text becomes difficult to read while it is moving. I assume this is a contrast, or perhaps response problem. But this is how I read big pages while scrolling...so its a bit of a pain.

(edit...you do know that prices have gone up recently due to a short supply of screens)

yah, I quite like my 19" Phillips CRT, playing UT at 1600x1200 with the Radeon 9700 Pro is awesome, but...

CRT looks ugly compared to TFT, also it takes up half a house. I am putting together a new home office and I want the screen to look fantastic and perform fantasticly.

A 19" or 20" TFT in silver, looks absolutely sexy as fook, whereas a 20" CRT just looks like a flippen lump.

I got a Hitachi CML174SXWB 17" TFT Monitor (Carbon) (MO-001-HI) from HERE ...only its about £50 more expensive now....its 16 ms response. I have this (in black) and a black-silver logitec cordless mouse mx700 and keyboard, cherrywood colored desk (loadsa space - no mouse mat), black leather reclining office chair with arms...and I have to say, it all looks really nice :)

There is a old review at www.anandtech.com pacing it against the samsung synchmaster. My card is a radeon 8500....so sometimes the graphics are laboured with new games at the native res....but it still plays vanilla ut2k3 really well on that res...no defects that I can tell and fantastic colors (note to self, must buy a new graphics card soon!). For games, the response rate seems fine...I play q2 occasionally (LMCTF) and get some tearing....but no such problem with q3-based games.

The hitachi looks like a nice unit, only issue for me is that it's a 17" and I'm really on the war path for like a 19" or even 20".

I've got a 19" CRT now, new one, which gives me 18" corner to corner, and I wan't to go up in size not down.

Seems they just have not managed to take the <=16ms times and bunged them into the larger screened units.

I am yet to actually find a 19"+ TFT with a ms respnoce of less than 20.

Any takes?

just a thought...you could look at flatscreen tvs...they should have good response times in theory as you need fast ms for decent video playback (edit...or you could have two 17 inch screens (or even 3)...that would be quite excellent for office work

I have the money to buy such a black TFT to match my all black setup, and by god the money is making it itch - i just can't part with it due to the response times / colour / brightness just ain't gonna be a patch on my 19" Iiyama CRT. :wall:

There is the 20" Hitatchi there that is £1075 which is 1600*1200 (i play cs in 1280*1024 window, so i need it to support 1600*1200) and is 16 ms response - but it's kinda pricey; signoff from the wife would be near on impossible.

That's twice i've noticed you've incorrectly corrected me. :p

CS does indeed support 1280*1024 and up to 1600*1200.

Yup - can indeedy. I have mine on a 4 way Adderview with a Linux box, 2xWindows and a spare PC. The two Windoze boxes run at different resolutions too, without any sort of image problems when switching between them all. Good quality (shielded) KVM cables are a must though.
