looking at upgrade possibilities, one annoyance is some new mobos not having ISA slots so i may have to ditch my Pace internal modem. Saw this at Scan and wondered if any1 could tell me what its gaming performance is like?

Diamond Pro 56K - v.90 Internal Modem PCI - Hardware Version

if there arent any good cheap modems about i'll have to buy a lesser mobo to use my pace in.... i dont mind something performing 10ms worse or something, as once back at uni i can use ISDN.

I think its going to be a case of picking a card and hoping for the best. All you can really do is make sure it support V90.

Since modem Q3 is torture (even on a Pace Internal), i don't think its worth worrying that much about the modem.

Possibly best to wait until v.92 becomes the standard (its the final length in analogue modem skank thingie) ... but if you don't wanna wait, yes, the diamond 56k thingie's rock :D

The 56iPRO is indeed a decent modem. I have one for sale that I brought in mistake because I thought my old diamond ISA wouldn't fit me new mobo as the board wasn't very deep so I thought me modem would hit the HD/Power (etc) led pins and power on pins right @ the end of the one and only ISA slot. Well in the end they wern't even touched by my ISA modem so I now have a spare diamond hardware pci modem!

Wanna buy? £25 inc P&P

necro: i still play qw (*snigger* etc), not q3 so a good modem/isp is approaching playable. still incredibly sucky compared to isdn but i need something for MCW :)

tug: thx for the offer, but i think ill get one from scan as it shows up on today only every week :)

I'd be careful about that "hardware" modem on scan's site
2 peeps in werk have bought it... and are not pleased..
1) it has system requirements ala. P166 16meg etc..
2) when eventually getting through to Scan's support line - thier response is "well its the most hardware internal type they stock.. when pushed they admit its a s/ware modem -- which is what most other retailer sites advertise it as. (a HCF chipset s/ware modem)

check the specs.. if it has "system requirements" other than a free slot its a s/ware modem... hard to find a PCI internal thats not one these days

ISA "hardware" HArdcore modems rool :D

HangTime: IKWYM. QW typically gave me a 90-110 ping, and even Q2 was reasonably playable. However, i don't like most of the Q2dm levels and the QW scene isn't that big anymore.. :(

Yes scan have shipped my m8 a modem like I have for sale 3 times and it turned out to be the SST56i software version. Pants.

If you MUST buy new, dabs.com do 'em.
