Assuming you have no instances of internet explorer open it sounds like you've got a utility or something that's loading up these ads.

Look in your startup folder, the run= and load= lines in your win.ini file for rogue applications.

Could also be in the registry under HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

What is your ISP? Is it a free one that installs a util that pops up these adds?

Cheers...

Whats your OS?

Is there any little icons down by the clock on your taskbard in windows?

Hmm, wouldn't delete anything in win.ini if you don't know what is does.

LOAD= and RUN= can have paths to programs after them, these programs will start when windows starts.

What OS are you running?

It is likely there is some third party addware running on your machine. You could try going to the control panel and click on 'add/remove programs' then look down the list for something that looks suspicious or that you dont recognise.

Be carefull though because you dont want to remove something that you actually need!

Download AdAware and let it run a full scan. Hopefully it'll weed out whatever is causing these popups.

Do you have anything like Kazaa running in the background, that brings up pop-up adverts all the time.

Solution : Download Kazaa Lite.

You may have stealthware on your PC.

Solution : Download Adware like Cadire said.

Also, windows 2000 has it, I'm not sure if windows XP has it though. It's the message thingy, (I'm not sure what it's called) but some faggots can use the built in messaging system to bring you all those adverts we all so love.

If you look at your 'hosts' file using notepad:

(C:\Windows\System32\Drivers\etc)

...that will tell you a lot about the kind of companies that are using your computer for naughty reasons.

Block port 135 with your firewall or disable the messanger service.
Start->Settings->Control Panel->Admin Tools->Services
right click on messenger and click on Properties
Click on the STOP button and then choose disable at the startup scrollbar.

LOL:)

I was having the same problem until I installed a new hd. I still don't know where they were coming from.

the problem with them is that there is no URL on those adverts so that you can easily block them.

Would even say :

Close any Instant Messenger (such as MSN Messenger, Yahoo Messenger, AOL Messenger etc.) if you have any installed.
Using ADware is a good call.
Close you Internet Explorer windows.

And you should be ready.

If you keep KaZaA running, you should download KaZaA lite. However, this does not fix your popup problem, since the 'desktop' page KaZaA Lite still loads opens a popup once an hour.

You can prevent the page from loading like this:

Start - Run...
Enter as the command line:
notepad C:\Windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts

You should get a file with some explanatory text and the following line, add the line in bold below it and save:

Code:
127.0.0.1 localhost
[B]127.0.0.1 desktop.kazaa.com[/B]

Note that this will turn the 'Start' page in KaZaA into a page with an error message next time you restart it or refresh the page, but it will get rid of your popups ;)

Edit: Nice how they add a Font option to the post/edit window, but forget to make the forum actually process the tags :)
yadda yadda

Oh, and that file location is for Windows 2000/XP only, it's somewhere else for Win9x. I believe it's C:\Windows\hosts.sam that needs to be renamed to C:\Windows\hosts
