Im gonna be hopefully ordering a new hard drive tomorrow, ive noticed this one what looks cheap and cheerful..

Maxtor Diamondmax Plus 8 30Gb UDMA 7200rpm

Ive looked around the usual computer places (dabs, ebuyer, scan etc) and found that ebuyer is about £6 cheaper than the 2nd cheapest one so im gonna go with them, all in it cost' £42.

Has anyone had any mis/fortune with one of these drives? I decided to buy it as a Backup because as i said many months back i have an IBM Deathstar so would like a bit of peace and mind ;)

Hey Super_Gray[SG]

I think I had this drive a little while ago and it seemed to be great considering the price. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure the likes of Western Digital (who do a 40Gb Special Edition drive with 8Mb of cache for £56) may be better, but it did exactly what I needed it to without any hitches. I've had a few Maxtor drives in the past, usually bundled, rather than chosen specifically, and they've all been fine.

Kind Regards

I've had a number of the series 8 drives and they work well, one which did go wrong on me but was fixed with the Maxtor HD utility.

Right, just got my Hard Drive, fitted it but im curious...

How exactly do i access it to format it?

It shows up in WinXP as a HD, and on the BIOS Screen, but how do i get it in MS Dos so i can format it?

/Its on same IDE as other HD, set as Slave

easiest way is to make a boot disc, boot into msdos, and run fdisk

Make sure fdisk is on your floppy.

As far as I know you can go into manage in XP, storage then disk management.

The drive should show there then you can format it in windows :)

You could also use dos or you could even use a tool like partition magic.

Yes, Right Click My Computer > Manage > Storage > Disk Management

There you should see the HDD and be able to create a new partition
