Ironically, I think we have had less freedom of thought and expression post 1998, than before it.

I don't believe that has anything to do with the human rights act.
The world was a different place 10+ years ago. Things have changed way to much to make a direct comparison with today.

I could say while apartheid was in place South Africa's crime levels were relatively low...doesn't mean to say scrapping that and introducing a Constitution (incl a bill of rights) instead was a bad idea...

I dunno about that. I know Im going to get huge abuse for this, but SA appears to be falling apart port-apartheid, judging from what the huge numbers of people leaving there seem to be saying.

We supported Mugabe in Zimbabwe simply because he was black, lets face it. And it doesnt seem to have done a lot for that country. SA has a larger amount of stuff to sell before it goes to shit, but I wonder if thats going to be the end result still.

Oh well, time will tell. I only wish Zimbabwe had some oil, then we could invade on some humanitarian pretext, and fuck him up

Well SA is on its way down hill...not enough homes for everyone (millions still living in tin shacks), too little infrustructure to build new homes, too few roads for the new homes, too little water for the new homes; too little energy for the new homes, not enough jobs for the people getting the new homes...and a huge influx of alien africans from the Southern African countries such as Zim, Nigeria etc

Out of control crime, no money to maintain current infrustructure as there is a million other things to spend the money on. like new houses. Gold and Diamonds not as lucrative as before, very little else of great value to export...

My neighbours claim that I should have obtained planning permission for building the Ark in my garden because it is development of the site, even though in my view it is a temporary structure. We had to then go to appeal to the Secretary of State for a decision. Then the Department of Transport demanded a bond be posted for the future costs of moving power lines and other overhead obstructions to clear the passage for the Ark's move to the sea. I told them that the sea would be coming to us, but they would hear nothing of it.



Getting the wood was another problem. All the decent trees have Tree Preservation Orders on them and we live in a Site of Special Scientific Interest set up in order to protect the spotted owl. I tried to convince the environmentalists that I needed the wood to save the owls - but no go!

When I started gathering the animals, the RSPCA sued me. They insisted that I was confining wild animals against their will. They argued the accommodation was too restrictive, and it was cruel and inhumane to put so many animals in a confined space. Then the County Council, the Environment Agency and the Rivers Authority ruled that I couldn't build the Ark until they'd conducted an environmental impact study on your proposed flood. I'm still trying to resolve a complaint with the Equal Opportunities Commission on how many disabled carpenters I'm supposed to hire for my building team. The trades unions say I can't use my sons. They insist I have to hire only accredited workers with Ark-building experience.



To make matters worse, Customs and Excise seized all my assets, claiming I'm trying to leave the country illegally with endangered species. So, forgive me, Lord, but it would take at least 10 years for me to finish this Ark."

Personally i like the human rights act. There are flaws, and some high profile Daily Mail flag waving cases, lots of hyperbole and misrepresentation and misunderstanding. But most of all lots of people who have had their lives protected by the legislation.
As for everyone who doesn't want human rights legislation, go live in somewhere like Zimbabwe or Iran
