an irritating hl problem

ok, ever since i've installed HL on my PC after a fresh format, whenever i go to play CS it takes ages connecting to a server, then sort of times out and hangs on the console. i have to type 'retry' so i connect to the server again from fresh and it eventually connects this time.
the obvious question and problem, is why the hell does it do this? (it never used to do it when i played 5.2 on some oldskool servers, and doesn't do it on any other mods)... i thought it might be a config problem, but i really don't have a clue about HL commands/configs, so couldn't go from there.

oh yeah, my pc spec: celeron 366, 64mb ram, v3 3000, sb live 5.1...

any help is very welcome, tia :]

Dunno if it was you in #bwadmins a couple of nights ago but we had a bit of a discussion about it, as a few people in there currently had, or had in the past, the same problem. I'm one of them and the only thing that we found out that we had in common was creative sound cards. Some people had massive specs and still had the problem so I doubt it's to do with your low PC specs although I would in general recomend upping your ram as u can ge 256mbs for around 20 quid these days and it will help your general performance a lot.

As I don't play CS a lot, and never have the problem in any other mods, I've never bothered to find a solution.

No, it wasn't me in #bwadamis, but I always speculated that it was down to my low spec PC, and the reason i haven't upgraded in a long time is because i can't be bothered. one day, i'll get a whole new system instead of slowly but surely building this one into a beast.

it may have been down to my soundcard, but i'm sure i had this problem before i got this sb live card, and if it is down to that i'm going to be monumentally pissed the only piece of hardware i've upgraded and it means it takes 10 minutes to connect to a cs server. argh!

i'd look into getting some new drivers for it, but afaik there are none for win2k :/

Recently i've had the problem where when it logs onto a server there is no writing on the screen at all,no wasnet wotchamacallit or anything.it connects anyway,but when i get in there and use a buy script i suddenly lose my ability to change weapon with the mouse wheel ,together with the icon at the top of the screen depicting which weapon im about to switch tr,I lose my t button to speak with.Or even worse i lose my console altogether.
i've found the best way to fix this (for some reason...) is to create a lan server with the "play cs" option in the regular game.as soon as i do this console/weapons/whatever is back to normal.

i went off and did a little research, and it seems there's possibly a link with voodoo cards and wickedgl drivers and this problem too... anyone else use a voodoo (3 3000 in particular) with the latest wickedgl drivers who either has the problem or hasn't?

looks like the only way to fix this could be going out to buy a new gfx card :[

ok, turns out it's likely to be my ram so i've ordered 256mb of ram. if, when it arrives and i install it, the problem has gone i'll make sure to mention it...
